About The Position

Perform work associated with the installation, operation, testing and maintenance of all protection and control devices and related equipment under direct, immediate or general supervision. Such devices and equipment include but is not limited to digital relays, electromechanical relays, intelligent electronic devices, Station Disturbance Recorders (SDR), digital fault recorders (DFR), oscillographs and event recorders, RTU's and station SCADA systems, statistical load metering, telemetering and transducers. Additionally, install, maintain and operate all power line carriers (PLC), tone, pilot wire, fiber and associated P&C communications equipment. Respond to emergency callouts and coordinate prompt restoration of service to customers as required. The successful candidate must live within a 45-minute driving distance under normal driving conditions to the Kingsport (TN) Service Center. This position works four (4) 10-hour shifts; Monday through Thursday. This position is posted at multiple grade levels and offers a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the P&C Technician II level, with increased educational, skill, experience and certification requirements for higher level P&C Technician I and Senior Technicians.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in electrical engineering technology, electronic technology or related technology field; or equivalent education and/or experience.
• Equivalent education and/or experience will be determined by the hiring manager and will be limited to military training and work experience of technical/technician nature (such as aviation and nuclear instrumentation technician).
• Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression or vacate the current classification.
• Must have the ability and desire to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties and/or responsibilities of the key job (P & C Technician Sr in this family and be qualified through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law.
• Considerable travel and overtime may be required to complete work assignments.
• Must successfully complete Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
• Minimum of 24 months satisfactory work experience as a P&C Technician II or the equivalent (as determined by the Company through demonstration, examination and performance appraisal).
• Must have satisfactorily performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of a P & C Technician II.
• Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of a P&C Technician II and 24 months of on-the-job experience or the equivalent.
• Equivalent experience is determined at the time of the assessment with appropriate time step credit given.
• Shall qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.
• Must be familiar with current, potential, closing and trip circuits.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in wiring of switchboard panels.
• Must have the ability to read, understand, and correct electrical prints, diagrams, and instruction books related to protection, control, and measurements circuits and equipment.
• Must have the ability to operate tools and other equipment necessary to perform the duties of this position.
• Must demonstrate the ability to perform duties in an alert, safe, and business-like manner and the ability to deal with customers and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.
• Ability to interpret, analyze and transmit facts graphically, orally, and in writing clearly and precisely.
• Minimum of 24 months satisfactory combined work experience as a P&C Technician I or P&C Technician I Certified or the equivalent (as determined by the Company through demonstration, examination and performance appraisal
• Working knowledge of current, potential, closing and trip circuits.
• Working knowledge of material such as cable, lugs, and wire as applied to protective relay and control circuits.
• Working knowledge of assembly, anchoring, and interchangeability of the various switchboard panel-support and through systems.
• Must have the ability to read, understand, and correct electrical prints and diagrams and the ability to use hand tools.
• Must demonstrate the ability to perform duties in an alert, safe, and business-like manner and the ability to deal with customers and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.
• Ability to interpret, analyze and transmit facts graphically, orally, and in writing clearly and precisely.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the performance of acceptance and installation tests on protection, control, and measurement devices and associated equipment in stations.
• Assist in the installation, maintenance, and operation of all power line carriers, station SCADA, and associated communications equipment or cables as assigned.
• Perform switching under direct supervision of qualified personnel following direction of the proper operating authority.
• Assist in the installation, maintenance, and operation of any new and added equipment or systems as assigned.
• Maintain test equipment and automotive equipment in good working order so that work can be performed safely and efficiently anywhere throughout the System.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports and drawings as required.
• Assist employees of equal or higher classification.
• Perform all duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules and operating regulations, NERC and environmental compliance, and practices.
• Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.
• Test protection & control devices and equipment periodically and as required.
• Calibrate protection & control devices and equipment on a pre-established schedule and as required.
• Assist with diagnosis of trouble, mis-operation, or damage of equipment and assist with corrective action to affect repair and prevent recurrence.
• Operate a computer device to test, calibrate, and retrieve data from protection & control and devices.
• Perform all tasks connected with the protection and control of all transmission lines, transformers, circuit breakers, rotating equipment (generating units, synchronous condensers, etc.), capacitor banks and all related equipment.
• Analyze industrial customer operation problems, suggesting improvements and initiating the same.
• Install and perform acceptance and installation tests on protection & control devices and associated equipment in stations.
• Analyze and interpret tests on protection & control devices and equipment and determine and perform corrective measures when needed.
• Install, maintain and operate all power line carriers, station SCADA equipment, or cables as assigned.
• Ensure the design, circuitry, installation and operation of equipment are correct prior to placing equipment in service.
• Perform switching at all voltage levels under the direction of the proper operating authority.
• Install and operate power line monitoring equipment; retrieve and analyze data utilized to measure system disturbances or harmonic levels.
• Install, maintain, and operate any new and added equipment or systems as assigned.
• Coordinate work with other sections and departments as needed.
