About The Position

We’re looking for a P&C Field Technician II to support our protection and control operations through hands-on testing, maintenance, and commissioning of transmission and distribution power equipment. You’ll work with relay systems, pilot channel equipment, and substation controls, ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance in high-voltage environments. This is a field-based role with travel and growth potential in a fast-moving utility services organization.

Requirements

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in protection and control systems testing, relay commissioning, and substation fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, data/fault analysis tools, and integration/automation equipment
  • Strong knowledge of three-phase systems, relays, test equipment, and protection schemes
  • Experience using test gear and wiring tools in the field
  • Able to interpret complex wiring and elementary diagrams
  • Comfortable handling multiple projects and deadlines in fast-paced settings
  • Strong documentation and computer skills, especially Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Willingness to travel at least 70% of the time
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Valid driver's license
  • Willing to work flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends or holidays
  • Capable of lifting 50+ lbs., crawling, climbing, and performing physical field work
  • Must complete annual safety training; some training may require travel outside the home region

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commissioning full substation setups
  • Completion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification in welding or a related field
  • Test equipment software proficiency
  • SCADA/Fault Data analysis familiarity
  • Hands-on experience with pilot wire or fiber systems
  • Prior RMS Energy project experience or references

Responsibilities

  • Perform protection and control relay testing, including voltage/current inputs, metering verification, relay calibration, trip checks, and SCADA/local alarm validation
  • Troubleshoot and repair substation relays and control systems
  • Commission new substations and related equipment, including pilot channels and communications gear
  • Support and collaborate with field service teams to complete assignments accurately and safely
  • Reference wiring diagrams and apply correct test procedures to various types of power equipment
  • Plan and execute testing activities with minimal supervision and zero service interruptions
  • Communicate professionally across diverse crews and client representatives
  • Document work accurately and ensure compliance with RMS and client safety protocols
  • Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
  • Adapt to outdoor and indoor field conditions and perform hands-on work in the field
