About The Position

This is a NON-MANAGEMENT JOB DESCRIPTION for an Overnight On-Call Shelter Worker. The role is responsible for providing overnight coverage and supervision of shelter operations, ensuring a safe, calm, and supportive environment for all residents during overnight hours. The worker will supervise and monitor evening and overnight shelter activities, conduct room and wellness checks, respond to emergencies, and provide peer support and mentorship to residents. This position requires the ability to work independently overnight, exercise sound judgment, and apply trauma-informed care principles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, including trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to respond effectively to medical, mental health, and emergency situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport with residents.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in high-stress or crisis situations.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, confidentiality standards, and shelter policies.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail for monitoring resident well-being.
  • Ability to document incidents accurately and maintain organized records.
  • Ability to work independently overnight while exercising sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently during overnight shift hours.
  • Possess knowledge of trauma-informed care principles.
  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Personal experience with homelessness and/or shelter residency is preferred.
  • Previous experience in peer support, residential services, or social services is also preferred.
  • Participates in annual professional development and/or advocacy regarding inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Providing overnight coverage and supervision of shelter operations, ensuring a safe, calm, and supportive environment for all residents during overnight hours.
  • Supervising and monitoring evening and overnight shelter activities, maintaining resident safety and enforcing shelter rules, boundaries, and expectations in a respectful and consistent manner.
  • Conducting regular room and wellness checks, responding appropriately to medical, mental health, and emergency situations, including contacting emergency services when necessary.
  • Remaining on-call for after-hours shelter-related emergencies and responding promptly to crises or conflicts using trauma-informed and non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Communicating and coordinating with hotel staff regarding any overnight building or facility-related emergencies or concerns.
  • Providing peer support, mentorship, and guidance to residents, utilizing lived experience to foster trust, stability, and positive engagement.
  • Modeling positive coping skills, appropriate behavior, and respectful interactions to support a healthy living environment.
  • Collaborating with daytime staff and management to ensure effective communication of overnight activities, incidents, and concerns.
  • Maintaining accurate records, logs, and incident reports in accordance with shelter policies and procedures.
  • Upholding confidentiality, safety standards, and all organizational policies at all times.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Presenting as a role model, supporting LCFS as a welcoming community, promoting diversity and inclusion, and collaborating to further equity.
  • Following all ethics policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality, and reporting breaches.
  • Conveying clear, accurate, timely, and respectful communication.
  • Informing appropriate management staff when an incident or crisis situation occurs.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients/residents, staff, interns, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Sharing skills and concepts with others and working effectively under time and environmental pressures.
  • Demonstrating sound judgment and foresight in safety awareness and daily work.
  • Notifying supervisory chain of any incidents or circumstances needing attention.
  • Reporting all suspicions or allegations of abuse immediately to their supervisor.
  • Ensuring appropriate utilization of materials and resources and minimizing waste.
