About The Position

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is seeking an Overnight Awake to join the Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) team. HKNC has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss since 1967. This role is part of a team committed to empowering individuals towards independence, employment, and quality of life. The position is located in a Group Home in Port Washington, NY, and involves providing support to residents in various aspects of their daily lives, ensuring a safe and sanitary living environment that meets OPWDD requirements.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree, or completion of two years of college (60 credits) preferably within the education or health-related field of study. OR High school diploma and four years of paid experience as a residence/group home aide working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities.
  • One year of experience working with individuals who are DeafBlind, blind, deaf or individuals with multiple disabilities.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and Internet required.
  • Must become AMAP certified and maintain this certification as a condition of continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent instruction in personal grooming, communication, wardrobe management, home management, and behavior support under the guidance of the Program Advisor and Assistant Program Advisor.
  • Participate in programming that promotes consumer growth and encourages maximum independence.
  • Conduct regular checks on all consumers during the overnight shift to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Participate in team meetings, sharing relevant observations with the instructional and clinical team.
  • Assist consumers with safe evacuation in the event of an emergency and participate in regularly scheduled drills.
  • Check on the security of the home from outside weather elements, strangers, etc.
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and/or monthly observation reports as required.
  • Share responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the home area.
  • Complete daily cleaning tasks, including surface and deep cleaning, to ensure compliance with OPWDD regulations for a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Document on the cleaning checklist according to the daily and weekly cleaning schedule.
  • Accompany and serve as a guide and/or facilitator of communication for consumers and professional staff members when assigned, potentially using a personal vehicle.
  • Dispense consumer medications after passing the AMAP course and maintain certification.
  • Be part of the team of essential staff to support residents during inclement weather, staff shortages, or emergency situations.
  • Accept all other duties as assigned by the Program Advisor and Assistant Program Advisor.
