About The Position

WSP USA is seeking a Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering student for an Overhead Transmission Line Design Engineering Intern position to work out of their Trussville, AL office. This temporary position is for individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program. WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States to provide hands-on, meaningful work experience. Interns gain exposure to real projects while working with senior staff and benefit from mentorship, networking opportunities, and career connections through the Developing Professionals Network. This internship is scheduled for Summer 2027, anticipated from May 17, 2027, through August 6, 2027, with a flexible start date. WSP has global expertise in power delivery, generation, and program management, enhanced by the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc. and the addition of TRC Companies, deepening their power practice and expanding energy advisory and intelligent grid services. They are partnering with clients to shape the evolution of energy systems worldwide.

Requirements

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2027 or later.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Demonstrated interest in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Ideal coursework includes structural analysis, concrete, steel, soils, foundations, and surveying.
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks.
  • Prior internship and/or related designing, drafting, or engineering experience is a plus
  • Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position
  • Familiarity with design, drafting, or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, and SharePoint is beneficial
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Learn basic principles of Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
