About The Position

We’re looking for a passionate OHL Project Engineer to join our Overhead Lines Teams! In this role, you'll undertake a broad range of activities associated with the operation, maintenance, inspection, fault investigation, and repair of plant and equipment across the transmission network. You'll play a key role in ensuring assets remain safe, reliable, and available to support network performance, while working to the highest health, safety, and environmental standards. You'll be involved in the safe delivery of maintenance programmes and site-based projects, providing technical expertise and oversight while supervising both internal teams and contract partners. Working in a dynamic operational environment, you'll contribute to the planning and execution of works, ensuring activities are completed efficiently, safely, and in line with company procedures and regulatory requirements. This role is peripatetic and supports projects across regions nationwide. While you will be aligned to a base location, regular travel is required to meet business needs, and a company vehicle will be provided for work-related travel. Base locations include Leeds, Newcastle, Preston, Swansea, Pentir (Bangor), Bristol, Northfleet and Pelham. Flexibility to work across different regions is essential.

Requirements

  • Effective planning, people management and supervisory skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work towards obtaining an SAP qualification.
  • Detailed technical understanding of Overhead Line (OHL) assets, work methods and project delivery.
  • Sound knowledge of Safety from the System, general health and safety requirements, and the ability to produce high-quality Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
  • Experience managing and controlling agreed project expenditure and allocated budgets.
  • Modern Apprenticeship including City & Guilds 232, or a relevant NVQ Level 3 qualification.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out roles as defined in National Grid’s processes and procedures including, Senior Authorised Person (SAP), Person in Charge (PIC) and Project Leader (PL) within their sphere of competency.
  • Undertake the role of Senior Authorised Person (SAP) under NG Safety Rules and NSI 4.
  • Undertake duties on a wide range of plant and equipment, including fault investigation and repair and routine inspections.
  • Ensure both Electricity Transmission and Contracted staff are set to work in accordance with National Grid policy and procedures, ensure risk assessments and method statements are in place for all work activities, and tool box talks take place.
  • Provide support and assistance to the OHL Team Engineer and other team members, including reviewing delivery performance.
  • Monitor, review and progress contracts, progress work undertaken by contractors, including enacting roles as defined in CDM Regulations.
  • Undertake project site/work delivery activities, acting as appointed Principal Contractor Representative (PC). Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) under National Grid’s procedures and processes.
