About The Position

This is a temporary position focused on the installation, repair, and maintenance of outside plant facilities. The role involves working with heavy-duty power equipment and small tools, operating various machinery, and performing construction tasks such as digging, placing poles, and running cables. Technicians will also be responsible for connecting wires, splicing and testing cables (including fiber optic), and using test equipment to identify and resolve faults. The job requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, climbing poles and ladders, and entering confined spaces like manholes and tunnels. Safety procedures must be strictly followed, and employees must be able to safely operate equipment and lift up to 120 pounds. The role also includes troubleshooting and maintaining digital carrier equipment and various types of terminals.

Requirements

  • Ability to load necessary tools and heavy equipment onto trucks or trailers.
  • Ability to receive work assignments and instructions from supervisor and/or through the use of a computer access terminal.
  • Ability to operate power equipment such as compressors, pumps, blowers, etc., and hydraulic aerial lifts (buckets) and ladders mounted on trucks.
  • Ability to perform construction work such as digging holes, placing poles, placing cable, air pipe and inner duct in various types of conduit systems and open excavations.
  • Ability to determine differences between wire and cable colors.
  • Ability to connect wires and cables to terminals and attach or detach various kinds of hardware.
  • Ability to splice and test PIC and non-pressurized cable and make appropriate enclosures.
  • Ability to use test equipment to check for toxic and explosive gas in manholes.
  • Ability to dismantle, move or remove aerial, underground or building wire, cable, associated equipment and hardware.
  • Ability to review and interpret work orders, work prints and Company practices.
  • Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather.
  • Ability to climb poles, ladders and enter tunnels, buildings, trenches, crawl spaces and manholes.
  • Ability to follow established safety procedures.
  • Must be able to safely utilize equipment resources to perform specified physical job duties, i.e., satisfies manufacturer's specifications for operation or use of equipment including weight limitations.
  • Ability to lift and move loads up to 120 pounds.
  • Ability to work with fiber optic cable from the distribution terminal to the customer premises.
  • Ability to splice and test non-pressurized cables in aerial, underground, buried, building configurations, multiple conductor cable, coaxial cable and also fiber optic cable.
  • Ability to perform tap in energizing count.
  • Ability to identify conductors in adjoining cable sections, according to diagrams and specifications.
  • Ability to close splices by enclosing with bolted on waterproof case, thermally applied shrinkable sleeving.
  • Ability to repair, rearrange, routines and maintain cable plant, fiber optic plant and channel cards.
  • Ability to use test equipment to isolate conductor faults or identify defective or broken fibers drops.
  • Ability to turn up, routines, troubleshoots and maintain digital carrier equipment channel cards and maintain light wave and metallic terminals.
  • Ability to use electrical instruments such Cable Locators, Resistance Fault Locators, and Open Fault Locators.
  • Ability to use measuring test sets and signal generators.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fiber optic cable from the distribution terminal to the customer premises.
  • Experience with color coded and tone identified wires in the connection of wires and cables to other telephone equipment.
  • Experience connecting cable pairs together.
  • Experience splicing and testing non-pressurized cables in aerial, underground, buried, building configurations, multiple conductor cable, coaxial cable and also fiber optic cable from the distribution terminal to the customer premises.
  • Experience performing tap in energizing count.
  • Experience identifying conductors in adjoining cable sections, according to diagrams and specifications by means of test signal identified wires or fiber optic test equipment.
  • Experience closing splices by enclosing with bolted on waterproof case, thermally applied shrinkable sleeving.
  • Experience repairing, rearranging (cable throws, etc), routines and maintaining cable plant, fiber optic plant and channel cards associated with the digital loop carrier equipment or the distribution terminals.
  • Experience using test equipment to isolate conductor faults or identify defective or broken fibers drops.
  • Experience turning up, routines, troubleshooting and maintaining digital carrier equipment channel cards and maintaining light wave and metallic terminals.
  • Experience using electrical instruments such Cable Locators, Resistance Fault Locators, and Open Fault Locators to verify and determine defects in the cable, conductors and wire.
  • Experience using measuring test sets and signal generators to verify and determine defective carrier equipment in subscriber/digital carrier systems.
