About The Position

With Collins Machine Works Outside or On-Site Machinists will set and operate manually controlled machines in skilled precision to perform repairs to equipment, vessels, and mechanical structures at customer facilities or at our Fifth Street and Syer Road locations in Portsmouth, Virginia. Our On-Site Machinists travel to customer locations locally, throughout the United States, and abroad to perform site surveys and carry out repairs. We are looking for candidates who are willing and able to work the Night Shift for this position. The official hours are 3:00pm-11pm, however, depending on the job we are contracted to- the candidate must be flexible and willing to work later and longer shifts as needed. Night Shift differential pay and OT pay are additional. Applicant must be a US citizen. Access to DoD facilities is required. Company is not able to sponsor work visa for this position.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED
3 to 5 years related experience is preferred
Language skills - effectively communicate and understand job instructions verbally and written in English
Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions to other employees in a professional and respectful manner
Ability and willingness to learn
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
A strong, proven interest in engineering and mechanical systems
Ability to read and interpret blueprints
Ability to read precision measuring tools
Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Ability to work independently and as part as a team
Basic understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel
Applicant must be a US citizen.

Turn, Drill, Tap, Bore, Hone, Polish machine processes
Large part machining experience preferred (ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear, etc.)

Responsibilities

Transport and set up tools, machinery, and fixtures to support machining operations
Perform machining operations using equipment such as: portable milling machines, clamshell lathes, line boring systems, grinding machines, hydraulic tensioning systems, as well as various hand and power tools.
Take measurements of machined features using precision measuring equipment
Properly and safely select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, fixtures, and tooling
Performs mechanical assembly and disassembly of equipment using a variety of hand and power tools
Studies applicable drawings and prints of work to be performed and follows instructions
Must be able to determine the proper tools required to perform given task
Operates and utilizes lifting aids as necessary to perform work
Communicates with customers and government representatives to coordinate work onsite
Ability to track parts and jobs in JobBOSS and Travelers
Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner while maintaining safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
Completes inspection and as-found condition reports for completed work
Work overtime as needed on evenings and/or weekends
Other duties as assigned
