About The Position

As an Outside Machinist at Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc., you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery aboard ships and within shipyard facilities. This role requires advanced mechanical skills, the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and adherence to safety standards to ensure the proper functioning and safety of all mechanical systems. The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require limited travel.

Requirements

  • Must have at least 5 years of experience as an outside machinist in a shipyard or marine construction environment; or have graduated from a registered apprenticeship program relevant to the trade.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and their components.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and operate in confined spaces.
  • Must be proficient in blueprint interpretation.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous technical training highly preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in mechanical work or related fields are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install mechanical equipment, such as engines, turbines, pumps, and valves, according to technical specifications and blueprints.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns.
  • Align and balance rotating equipment and machinery using precision tools and instruments.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to restore equipment functionality.
  • Accurately read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine the layout and assembly of mechanical systems.
  • Fabricate and modify mechanical components as needed to fit specific applications, using various tools and machinery.
  • Conduct testing and calibration of mechanical systems to ensure they meet industry standards and project specifications.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets industry standards and project specifications, making necessary adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople and departments to complete projects within specified timelines.
  • Effectively perform work on multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities successfully.
  • Mentor department employees and other assigned crew members, providing support and training as needed.
