About The Position

This role involves working within a team of Outside Machinists to achieve production goals, standards, and quality in accordance with company policies, while fostering a positive and motivated team environment. The Machinist Supervisor oversees this position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 1 year minimum work experience at Austal as a Trade Assistant OR 1 year experience in a machine shop environment.
  • Working knowledge of machining procedures, good mechanical aptitude and the ability to follow directions.
  • Must possess knowledge of ship terminology.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Ability to safely operate fixed and non-fixed machinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels.
  • Must be able to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Proven problem solving abilities.
  • Must have full set of personal tools.
  • All candidates must meet Austal USA’s basic employment eligibility guidelines: 18 years or older at time of application.
  • Able to provide proof of US Person status (permanent resident or citizen).
  • No felony convictions of theft/deception or violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
  • No felony convictions of drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • Willing to submit to a background check.
  • High School Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience with comparable trade experience defined as five (5) or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, two (2) years of experience in shipbuilding, or, education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Install equipment on board vessels in a safe and productive manner.
  • Disassemble, repair and re-assemble shipboard equipment as directed by the supervisor.
  • Mark and measure to close tolerances using Austal calibrated equipment.
  • Safely rig equipment following all OSHA requirements.
  • Inspection of work, identification of potential problems, initiation of corrective actions.
  • Increase awareness of Quality procedures within the department.
  • Ensure adherence to correct work procedures.
  • Perform as a productive working team member that meets daily goals set by the supervisor.
  • Continuously improve communications and flexibility within the team.
  • Help build the team environment.
  • Build pride of workmanship and quality through on the job training.
  • Contribute towards innovation / productivity improvements.
  • Assist in the control of waste elimination, e.g. materials, consumables etc.
  • Assist supervisor to maintain control of department equipment and its maintenance.
  • Work towards the team goal of delivering the vessel on time.
  • Follow Austal guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensure work area is left clean, all equipment and tools are stowed away safely and protected against damage.
  • Complies with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company.
