About The Position

The Outside Laborer plays a critical role in the efficient and safe operation of the mill’s external functions. This position is responsible for operating a wide variety of heavy equipment, performing outdoor labor, handling various materials, maintaining mill supply levels, and assisting with outdoor housekeeping. Work is performed in all weather conditions and requires strong communication, attention to safety, and physical endurance. This list is not all inclusive, and job duties can be added as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience with forklift, loader, switcher, and other heavy equipment operation preferred.
  • Knowledge of tailer operation, including how to safetly assist in navigating and positioning trailers within the facility.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to anticipate and resolve issues proactively.
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and handheld scanning devices for inventory and logistics tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain forklift propane tank levels through the main fill station.
  • Measure slurry levels in tank using ladders and tape measures; operate slurry pumps and valves as needed.
  • Safely unload chemicals into designated areas while ensuring proper PPE and handling procedures are followed.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness within the cell room and surrounding area for shipment efficiency.
  • Collect, compact, and dump mill dumpsters with the use of a forklift and loader.
  • Communicate with internal truck drivers and assist external truck drivers in following proper offloading procedures.
  • Load poly bails and unload supply shipments within the furnish prep department.
  • Coordinate railcar movements by operating the shifter and maintaining closure of mill intersections.
  • Complete proper rotation of outside and polebarn duties
  • Inspect incoming fiber sources for any non-compliance based on mill fiber guidelines.
  • Perform scanning and verification of incoming trailers using wood yard numbers and tags, ensuring accurate tracking of paper bales per Fiber Queue log.
  • Manage the unloading process for incoming trailers by operating dock control panels, manually securing air brakes for live loads, and labeling all incoming materials with appropriate paper type identification.
  • Operate forklifts to safely transport and stack paper bales / rolls onto designated wood yard trailers.
  • Maintain up-to-date records in the fiber log by scanning wood yard trailer barcodes prior to loading, ensuring accurate documentation of paper types assigned to in-house trailers.
  • Execute color bale unloads by recording trailer data and clearly labeling associated bales, then properly organizing and storing them in the designated section of the pole barn warehouse.
  • Monitor team calendar schedule via computer; ensure timely response to scheduled tasks.
  • Maintain consistent communication with truck jockeys and other logistics personnel.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards of all work areas and mill-grounds.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate inventory of supplies to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Perform snow removal duties using manual and powered equipment, including plow trucks and snow blowers.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Follow all chemical handling protocols including emergency shut offs and PPE requirements.
  • Conduct and document daily safety inspections for forklifts, switchers, loaders.
