About The Position

The Outreach Specialist is responsible for conducting “street” and agency outreach for homeless Veterans with the Homes for All Veterans (HAV) program. This staff member will be the HAV program’s expert on local homeless outreach and engagement.

Requirements

  • Ability to evaluate individual homeless Veteran needs, and display sound judgment in the conduct of duties within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to organize, train and lead volunteers on homeless outreach.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to be self-directed and multi-task oriented.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office Suite
  • High School degree with 1-2 years of prior experience working with homeless individuals and/or households or prior experience working with military and/or Veteran populations.
  • Ability to work independently while meeting work deadlines and program standards
  • Prior case management and/or homeless outreach experience
  • Prior experience working with homeless individuals and/or households
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proof of motor vehicle insurance
  • Personal vehicle in good operating condition for use during work
  • No major violations in the past three years.
  • Ability to meet and maintain agency driving requirements and operate agency vehicles

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, social sciences, human services or related field
  • Experience working with military and/or Veteran populations
  • Prior military experience

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with local homeless shelter providers to quickly identify Veterans receiving shelter and connect them to HAV.
  • Conduct regular “street” outreach to form relationships with homeless Veterans and connect them to services that end their homelessness.
  • Provide resources for Veterans like food and shelter options.
  • Routinely deliver bus passes and food boxes to homeless Veterans.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with the VA Homeless Outreach Coordinator, City/County homeless outreach teams, other outreach programs and regularly collaborate in outreach efforts.
  • Attend various local Veteran treatment courts when possible, and collaborate with Veteran organizations locally and statewide.
  • Work closely with the HAV Eligibility Specialist to assist homeless Veterans with the program eligibility determination process and refer homeless Veterans to other community services to meet their needs.
  • Support community efforts to end veteran homeless by reviewing HMIS and Built for Zero veteran data to inform outreach efforts.
  • Supports efforts of community coordinated entry to advocate for veteran’s housing opportunities.
  • Provide office coverage as needed to help support walk-ins.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Actively communicate with clients, caregivers, families, stakeholders, advocates and providers.
  • Works with clients, families and appropriate community agencies as necessary to facilitate services for staff, stakeholders or clients.
  • Ability to meet/work with staff, stakeholders or clients in a variety of settings.
  • Attends staff, team and department meetings.
  • Attends in-services, staffing and other meetings with supervisor’s approval.
  • May be appointed to committees.
  • Participates in agency and community planning and education.
  • Develops and maintains records, plans and reports.
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
