About The Position

Light of Life Rescue Mission, a safe refuge for the homeless in Pittsburgh since 1952, is seeking a full-time Outreach Specialist for its Emergency Shelter on Pittsburgh's Northside. Based in the Women's Day Center, this role involves assisting and caring for homeless individuals who enter the Center, addressing their immediate needs, and providing Christian hospitality and safety. The specialist will collaborate with other organizations to build relationships with the homeless and encourage them to transition from the streets into the mission's recovery program. The mission values diversity and believes each person has inherent value and dignity. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys creative problem-solving, building rapport, and adapting to changing conditions.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Associate's degree in social work or related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years counseling/case management experience preferred.
  • CPR/First-Aid certification preferred.
  • Previous experience working in human services preferred.
  • Knowledge of drug and alcohol and mental illness helpful.
  • Competent in the use of personal computers, including Microsoft Suite products and possesses the ability to learn new proprietary software.
  • Exhibits self-awareness, humility, interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence.
  • Shares the love of God with authenticity and practices Christian hospitality.
  • Manages various tasks simultaneously.
  • Works well in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes service plans and manages cases for transient homeless individuals in the Day Center, addressing immediate needs and assisting with longer-term planning.
  • Works with and trains volunteers for service in Outreach.
  • Collaborates with a team, including other organizations and Light of Life staff, to address general homeless issues and build relationships with individuals living on the street.
  • Creates and sustains partnerships with other social service agencies.
  • Gathers and records data for qualitative and quantitative analysis for both the County's homeless management system and Light of Life's in-house data management system.
  • Provides input into all Outreach issues.
  • Assists with transporting guests to other facilities or partner social service agencies.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Walks alongside clients and shares the mission's way of life through actions and words.
  • Establishes mutual trust and creates a safe, authentic environment to help clients move away from issues that have led to addiction and homelessness.
  • Serves clients in a healthy/life-giving manner and practices a self-evaluative lifestyle.
  • Resolves issues according to Light of Life's principles and follows the staff manual.
  • Exhibits love for co-workers and clients.
  • Helps clients make choices that are in their eternal best interest.
  • Practices responsible stewardship of all resources.
  • Models personal responsibility, accountability, timely reporting, and a reflective lifestyle.
