About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager, Outreach Services, this role is responsible for covering various Outreach Patient Service Centers (PSCs), traveling to patients' homes, and visiting Assisted and Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities. The Phlebotomist performs day-to-day PSC and Home Draw operations, including customer service, training, patient registration, test ordering, venipunctures, specimen processing, specimen tracking, and supply management, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Phlebotomist must represent a positive image and demonstrate excellent customer service. Use of a personal vehicle is required, with adherence to Lifespan’s System-Wide Personal Vehicle Policy, including a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, current vehicle registration, and weekly mileage logs for reimbursement. The position involves working independently to obtain blood specimens from homebound patients, LTC, and assisted living facilities, participating in an on-call rotation, and completing efficient routes to minimize patient wait times. The Phlebotomist will call patients prior to visits, leave door knockers for missed appointments, and notify Home Draw Administration of any changes. Specimen processing for laboratory testing may occur during on-call and varied hours when processing staff are unavailable. On-call coverage at multiple PSC locations is required, necessitating flexibility. The role involves working cooperatively with management on new procedures and protocols and assisting with problem resolution. Responsibilities include reviewing requisitions, accurately completing lab orders in LifeChart and non-LifeChart systems, referencing the pathology handbook/electronic lab guide, and clarifying test orders with physicians as needed. The Phlebotomist will perform registrations, enter test orders, medical necessity, Media Manager functions, and specimen processing & tracking. Maintaining the Outreach Float Resource Binder is also a duty. The role provides coverage at PSCs throughout RI and nearby Massachusetts, supporting day-to-day operations, patient registration, test orders, venipunctures, and ensuring supplies and equipment are available, routinely checking expiration dates. Daily PSC checklists must be completed and recorded by the end of the shift. Answering phones and performing routine clerical duties are also part of the role, along with donning and doffing PPE as required. Delivering and maintaining on-site laboratory supply inventory at LTC facilities is another responsibility. The Phlebotomist will obtain blood samples according to venipuncture technique and for specialized tests, monitoring patients for reactions. Samples must be labeled, dated, initialed, recorded, and prepared appropriately for transport. Adherence to all system-wide and departmental policies, including Call-Out Protocol, Unplanned Absences and Tardiness, Patient Identification and Verification, Patient Look-Up, Venipuncture and Specimen Labeling, is mandatory. Requirements

Acquired through high school plus accredited course through a licensed phlebotomy educational program, hospital, or a community college.
Phlebotomy certification required.
Previous phlebotomy experience with demonstrated venipuncture proficiency and ability to function independently preferred.
Demonstrated customer service and communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with all levels, allay fears of patients and to perform other activities which require courtesy and tact.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Knowledge of blood collection equipment, anticoagulants used, special precautions and interferences and ability to implement principles of aseptic techniques.
Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, anatomic terminology, universal precautions, first aid and safety.
Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants and visual acuity to distinguish chromatic colors.
Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and current vehicle registration.
Functions independently with a broad scope of hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and practices in carrying out duties at satellite locations.
Must have the ability to complete additional duties as required.

Responsibilities

Process specimens into laboratory for testing during on-call and varied hours when Processing staff are unavailable.
Provide on-call coverage at multiple patient service center locations.

Review and accurately complete LifeChart and non-LifeChart generated lab orders.
Reference pathology handbook/electronic lab guide and obtain additional clarifying information from physician as necessary for test orders.
Perform registrations, enter test orders, medical necessity, Media Manager, specimen processing & tracking functions.
Maintain Outreach Float Resource Binder.
Provide coverage at Outreach patient service centers (PSC’s) throughout RI and nearby Massachusetts.
Support day-to-day PSC operations, patient registration, test orders, venipunctures, ensures supplies and necessary equipment are readily available, routinely checks expiration dates.
Assist with daily patient service center checklists, ensure tasks are complete and recorded by end of shift.
Answer phones and perform routine clerical duties as needed.
Don/Doff PPE as required.
Deliver and maintain on-site laboratory supply inventory at LTC facilities.
Following Order of Draw, obtain blood samples from patient according to venipuncture technique.
Obtain samples for specialized tests.
Monitor patient for potential reactions including diaphoresis, sleeping, etc.
Label, date, initial, record, and prepare samples appropriately for transport to laboratory for testing and analysis.
Adhere to all system-wide and departmental policies including but not limited to Departmental Call-Out Protocol, Unplanned Absences and Tardiness, Patient Identification and Verification, Patient Look-Up, Venipuncture and Specimen Labeling.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Accountable for coaching, guiding, and directing Phlebotomists working at their assigned locations.
Responsible for providing feedback to manager on any operational questions and/or concerns.
