About The Position

MercyOne is seeking an Outpatient Specialty Registered Nurse (RN) for their Oncology department at the MercyOne North Iowa Cancer Center. This role is part-time and involves providing direct patient care within the nursing process, focusing on oncology/hematology patients. The nurse will be responsible for patient and family education, collaborating with the healthcare team, and practicing within professional nursing standards. The Cancer Center is designed for comprehensive, accessible care in one location, offering state-of-the-art therapies, personalized medicine, surgery, clinical research, and support services. MercyOne North Iowa is a large healthcare provider and employer in the region, serving a significant number of inpatients and outpatients annually, and also functions as a teaching institution with various residency and fellowship programs, and clinical training sites for numerous medical fields.

Requirements

Current RN license in the state of Iowa.
Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate from an RN program required.
Must complete and successfully pass Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) courses: Cancer Basics and Chemotherapy Biotherapy: Fundamentals of Administration courses after 9 months of employment.
Must successfully complete the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certificate course, and renew every 2 years.

Nice To Haves

Strongly preferred OCN certification within 2 years of employment.
Prefer minimum of 4 years of experience in a health care setting, inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice or clinic experience, all possess transferable skills or knowledge valuable to the Cancer Center.

Responsibilities

Accept responsibility and accountability for the delivery of care through the nursing process.
Direct and guide patient and family education.
Care for all types of oncology/hematology and related patients in Medical Oncology while maintaining professional nursing standards.
Practice nursing within the Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa professional nursing practice plan.
Demonstrate customer service as a number one priority, integrating Service Excellence into all aspects of the work day, taking responsibility for service recovery and working for outcomes that delight the customer.
Evaluate patient/family response to nursing interventions and act as a resource for the nursing process to other clinical nurses.
Assess patients and identify common physical and psychosocial needs, developing the ability to identify unusual, complex physical and psychosocial needs.
Guide and direct patient care activities by utilizing clinical/critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice.
Triage patient phone calls and assess for level of care needed, referring to physicians or providing nursing intervention as assessment indicates.
Assist the physicians/midlevel provider in patient care activities (consultations, exams, procedures, follow-ups, treatments).
Provide or facilitate learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family by assessing learning needs and formulating and initiating a teaching plan.
Serve as an educator to patients and families regarding management of parental and oral antineoplastic therapy administration, safe-handling, medical adherence, and side-effect management of said therapy.
Collaborate with members of the inter-disciplinary health care team to achieve desired patient care outcomes.
Adapt positively to the ever-changing health care environment by supporting technology and process changes.
Identify, participate, and take action in activities that solve problems, promote better patient care, nursing development, and professional growth, and support process improvement teams that influence customer satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and financial stability.
Promote and maintain positive working relationships in a collegial manner with coworkers, medical staff, and personnel of other departments and demonstrate effective communication skills.
Assist others needing help as necessary and display flexibility in job responsibilities.
Participate in achieving the department budget by managing own work hours, flexing and staffing to volumes, keeping OT to a minimum, utilizing supplies appropriately, and continually applying process improvement techniques to eliminate waste in work flows.
Participate in the application of process improvement principles by assisting in development and data collection.
Participate in the department’s Culture of Safety/Engagement Action Plan.
Attend and participate in department staff and committee meetings.
Provide competent patient care by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
