About The Position

Under the supervision of the Emergency Department Manager, the primary function of the Outpatient Procedure Registered Nurse is to provide quality patient care by assisting in the performance of all outpatient procedures in Mid Valley Hospital. Assess, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients. Communicates with the doctors, PA, NP as needed about patient’s condition, assists with procedures, and assists with maintaining equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement projects, maintain regulatory agency requirements, nursing and medical center policies and standards. Other responsibilities may be assigned or delegated by the Emergency Department Manager or CNO.

Requirements

Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing
The Emergency Department will employ only registered nurses who meet the requirements of a staff nurse at Mid-Valley Hospital plus the special qualifications necessary to render quality emergency care.
She/he must demonstrate professional behavior.
Current unrestricted state nursing licensure.
ACLS is required upon hire with biannual renewal, CPR annually.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively: delegate and coordinate through leadership skills.
She/he must demonstrate professional behavior.
She/he must participate in continuing education and demonstrate motivation for continued self-improvement.
Ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels; i.e. patients, families, employees, physicians, etc.

Responsibilities

Ensures quality patient care by following department policies and guidelines.
Maintains IV competency.
Prepares each suite prior to each case by following the daily schedule and procedure requirements.
Ensures safe patient care by placing blood pressure cuff, sensor for pulse oximeter, nasal cannula, and cardiac electrodes appropriately.
Assists with positioning of patients.
Assists the MD in the procedure rooms, including but not limited to: charting vitals/patient status and the collection and labeling of specimens.
Delegate’s tasks to the MAs, recognizing what duties are within their scope of practice.
Ensures optimal outcomes by proper handling of instruments and equipment.
Maintains manufacturer’s recommendations and Mid Valley policies by proper processes-cleans, disinfects and reprocess instruments.
Understands the inventory of sterile, non-sterile and disinfected instruments by demonstrating proper handling, function, availability and location.
Prioritizes activities based on knowledge and comprehension of Outpatient procedures.
Understands operation, function and handling of special equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
Provide assessment by troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment. If further service is required, process equipment, complete paperwork and calls biomed.
Assists where needed to insure efficient and safe care in the Outpatient patient continuum.
Maintains adequate inventory based on department need.
Demonstrates economic use of equipment and supplies.
Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient’s rights are protected.
Communicate appropriate information to other members of the healthcare team in a timely manner.
Participate in overall Mid Valley Outpatient functions including, but not limited to, scheduling of procedures, training of new staff, maintaining appropriate statistics, assisting with Quality Assurance projects, education to improve self and others, and attending staff meetings and annual education in-services as required.

Performs independent monitoring of patients.
Charts appropriately on the EMR.
Appropriately scans patients and medications when administering medications, and Documents accordingly on the EMAR.
Communicates changes in patient’s condition immediately to appropriate care provider.
Evaluates treatments given and documents response of patient.
Notifies care provider of untoward responses to treatments given.
Adheres to departmental hospital policies and procedures.
Follows guidelines for obtaining permission to treat for minors or unconscious persons.
Emergency Room nurse exercises authority consistent with the role and responsibility in accordance with the nursing practice act.
The Emergency Department nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.
Serves as a professional role model.
Safeguards patient’s right to privacy by judiciously protecting confidential information.
Emergency Department nurse is able to remain calm and perform necessary duties during challenging and stressful situations.
Participates in unit activities.
Participates in departmental and intradepartmental problem solving.
Record on file in HR. Each individual is responsible for keeping file current and updated on needed Education and CEU’s.
Attendance may be required at departmental staff meetings to formulate needed changes in procedures and work schedules. Make suggestions, constructive criticism and personal requests in a non-abrasive manner.
Read and initial memos and administrative directives as posted.
Maintain a well-stocked and clean department by cleaning equipment and replacing supplies before leaving the unit.
Reports for scheduled shift on time and prepared to assume responsibilities.
Reports to work in proper uniform/attire.
Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time.
Varies work schedule to meet the needs of the department.
Ensures the department manager has approved all scheduled overtime.
Seek supervisor approval before working beyond scheduled hours that will result in overtime.
Schedules all time off with supervisor’s approval.
Strictly adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policies 100% of the time.
Performs all duties as assigned.
Wears I.D. badge in a visible location at all times on hospital property.
Protects I.D. and access badge and reports any issues or loss immediately to supervisor or to the Human Resource Department.
Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for information communicated at meetings and in email.
Attends all mandatory in service on a timely basis as scheduled.
Participates as an active team member at staff meetings.

Respond appropriately to any Codes while working any shift (Code Blue, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Amber, Code Red, Code Orange, Rapid Response Team).
Demonstrates adequate knowledge of security issues, i.e. personal protection, protection of personal and hospital property.
Be familiar with and comply with the Mid-Valley Hospital & Clinic Personnel Handbook and Policies.
Be familiar with the collective bargaining agreement (Union Contract) of the UFCW21 and Mid-Valley Hospital.
Demonstrates the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.
Non-Clinical Personnel: This position has no responsibility for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients. However, the ability to communicate and interact with patients of all ages is required.
