Outpatient Counseling Intern
About The Position
Join our team at The Up Center for a Graduate-level internship. We are seeking Master's level students in Clinical Mental Health or Social Work who are looking to complete at least two semesters of placement beginning January 2027. The position is largely based in the Ghent area of Norfolk, with some flexibility to travel to Suffolk/ Western Tidewater. We offer clinical supervision, and a dynamic opportunity for further clinical and skill development. The Up Center is a nonprofit United Way Community Partner that provides uniquely personal services to more than 10,000 children, families, and individuals each year. The Up Center has one of the most service-integrated environments in Hampton Roads to support adults, families and children in improving their lives through counseling.
Requirements
- Master's Level student at an accredited School for Counseling or Social Work.
- Grade Point average 3.0 or above.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of professional counseling and/or social work, including case work methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of the functions of social service agencies.
- Ability to work effectively with other professional disciplines.
- Two semester commitment.
- Communication skills, including the ability to write case records, letters, and reports.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct clinical counseling to a diversified caseload to include individuals, couples, families, and co-facilitate psychoeducational groups.
- Maintain all correspondence notes, paperwork, 90-day reviews, discharge summaries, and case management functions such as making referrals to other agencies, some case-management, collateral calls, etc. for each assigned client.
- Learn and utilize the EHR system for documentation.
- Ensure all clinical notes are completed within 24 hours of service and approved and signed by the intern’s clinical supervisor.
- Utilize a variety of treatment modalities according to requirements of caseload.
- Video record clinical sessions as required by supervisor/school.
- Attend all group and individual supervision meetings as required.
- Make formal case presentations to clinical staff.
- Attend all trainings.
- Seek out additional clinical information and training opportunities.
- Provide research for theories/cases/modalities, etc. as assigned.
- Assist with intake of clients including but not limited to returning calls, gathering client demographic information, taking walk-in intakes, etc.
- Assist with data collection for grants and outreach to communities.
- Complete all evaluations as assigned by supervisor and school.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
