Provides diagnostic assessment, treatment, and consultation for children with disorders of speech, language, cognitive or social communication, swallowing, and related conditions. This role involves developing and implementing evidence-based individualized care plans to improve communication skills, feeding/swallowing, and overall quality of life. Speech pathologists collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, and educators, as well as caregivers, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an area of clinical practice that addresses the needs of individuals with significant and complex communication disorders. There is wide variability across this population in terms of diagnosis, age, communication modality and type of AAC use. The need for AAC is characterized by impairments in speech-language production and/or comprehension, including spoken and written modes of communication.
