About The Position

As a member of the Satellite Health Facility, the OT/PT Assistant supervises or assists patients with therapeutic interventions, in an individual and/or group setting, under the direction of a registered Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist. The OT/PT Assistant role will include but is not limited to ADL retraining, mobility, transfers and gait training, therapeutic exercise, educating regarding the use of assistive devices, kitchen and homemaking interventions, cognitive/perceptual retraining, wheelchair training, therapeutic groups, documentation, maintenance of therapeutic groups, maintenance of therapeutic supplies and equipment as well as other duties as required. OT/PT Assistants recruited for the SHF are hired through the Nursing Resource Team (NRT).

Requirements

  • Graduate of a recognized, accredited OTA/PTA certificate or diploma program from an approved Community College
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of active surgical orthopedic and general internal medicine with populations such as fractured hips, and medical patients awaiting long term care placement
  • Demonstrated safe work practices and independently and also as an effective team member in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Is self-directed, accepts and carries out assignments independently, sets and adjusts priorities and organizes self and work areas in a timely, effective and flexible manner
  • Demonstrated the ability to do repetitve reaching, bending, pushing, lifting and demonstrate good body mechanics
  • Communicates effectively (verballym non-verbally and written) with staff, patients and families, using a patient and family centered approach which applied concepts of communication, collaboration and responsiveness
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, initiation, problem-solving and clinical reasoning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear understanding of the OTA/PTA role and the OT/PT services to client/family/staff as required
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize shared workload among several therapists

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant recent work experience with medicine and/or ortho population preferred
  • Related continuing education, advance training and upgraded skills an asset
