OSP Construction Project Engineer
About The Position
As an OSP Construction Project Engineer, you will help expand Lumos' fiber network by overseeing contractor performance, resolving field challenges, and driving multiple fiber construction projects safely, on schedule, and within budget. You will work with cross-functional teams and contractor partners to move projects from field readiness through closeout while maintaining quality, safety, and efficiency. This is a field-based position requiring regular onsite work throughout the Cook County, Illinois market. Candidates must reside within one hour of the market and be able to travel between active jobsites.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of experience in OSP construction, telecommunications engineering, network deployment, or related field operations.
- Strong knowledge of aerial, underground, and buried fiber construction, including OSHA and NESC requirements.
- Experience managing contractors and several active construction projects at the same time.
- Strong project management, problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Valid, unrestricted driver's license and ability to travel throughout the market.
- Ability to reside within one hour of the Cook County, IL market and travel between active jobsites.
- At least eighteen years of age at the time of application.
Nice To Haves
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, telecommunications, or a related field.
- Direct experience with FTTH, fiber broadband, telecommunications, or utility construction.
- Experience with Sitetracker, Smartsheet, or a similar construction or project-management platform.
- Experience coordinating with municipalities and utilities while improving processes in a fast-moving build environment.
Responsibilities
- Own multiple OSP builds across the market from construction readiness through closeout.
- Set clear expectations for contractors and subcontractors and hold them accountable for safety, quality, schedule, and budget.
- Track production, schedules, costs, risks, and field progress, and provide stakeholders with clear, timely updates.
- Inspect active jobsites and ensure work meets OSHA, NESC, Lumos, and applicable construction standards.
- Coordinate permitting, materials, utilities, municipalities, and other field dependencies that keep construction moving.
- Resolve field roadblocks and community concerns quickly, professionally, and with sound judgment.
- Partner with Engineering, Operations, Permitting, and Supply Chain to improve how Lumos plans, builds, and scales.
