About The Position

An individual in this position inspects and makes timely written reports of employee exposures to potentially hazardous work conditions in North Carolina workplaces, and recommends the issuance of citations when justified by the occupational safety and health laws of the State of North Carolina. Travel is necessary to make on-site inspections of safety-related items such as physical hazards and chemical exposures. The types of inspections conducted include complaints, referrals, follow-ups, accidents, fatalities, and general schedule assignments. All inspections are conducted in accordance with the North Carolina Field Information System (FIS) and the Field Operations Manual (FOM) as established for administration of the 1973 Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Must live within 50-mile radius of Charlotte field office.
  • Must be knowledgeable and decisive in consistently applying the OSHNC standards.
  • Must be a self-motivated professional who has outstanding time management and database management skills.
  • Must be physically, mentally and emotionally capable of conducting independent inspections.
  • Must have excellent documentation and writing skills to write legally defensible reports.
  • Must be proficient in keyboarding using word processing programs.
  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferably with a major in occupational safety, industrial management or technology, industrial engineering, industrial arts, engineering operations, or a closely-related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections; or Associate degree in industrial safety and health technology, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Applicants enrolled in an applicable bachelor’s or master’s degree program will be considered if all degree requirements will be completed by the end of the current semester.
  • Foreign degrees require an official evaluation for U.S. equivalency and must be submitted to Human Resources for verification.

Responsibilities

  • Speaks with complainants, employers, state and local agencies (including law enforcement) and NCDOL personnel.
