Responsible for the orthopedic casting, bracing, and splinting of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician. Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders. Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces. Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting. Assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate clinical staff members. Removes sutures and staples. Provides wound care and incisional dressings. Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures. Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes. Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids. Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary. Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.
