About The Position

This role is responsible for ensuring the proper reprocessing and availability of orthopedic equipment for operating room schedules. The technician will decontaminate, inspect, test, package, and sterilize power equipment according to manufacturer instructions. They will also manage equipment repairs, coordinate with Biomedical Engineering, and maintain documentation. The position requires staying updated on industry changes and best practices, conducting in-services, and potentially assisting with departmental procedures and policies. The technician must be competent in operating various reprocessing equipment and technology, including washers, sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, incubators, and instrument tracking systems. In times of staffing shortages or increased workload, the technician may perform general technician duties and potentially assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor or manager.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent required.
Three (3) years' experience in Central Service required.
CS technician certification (CRCST) from IAHCSMM or CBSPD.
Instrumentation Specialist (CIS) certification or obtain within six months from date of hire or transfer.
Proficient in using instrument tracking software.
Knowledge of medical terminology and supplies.
Basic knowledge of computers and computer office software programs.
Great customer service skills.
Critical thinking skills for interaction with OR/CS staff and customers to resolve issues.

Responsibilities

Reviews daily operating room schedule to ensure adequate coverage and resources for orthopedic equipment needs.
Reprocesses power equipment, including decontamination, inspection, testing, packaging, and sterilization according to manufacturer's IFUs.
Performs annual competency validation for Central Service (CS) staff on power equipment reprocessing tasks.
Supports staff education for power equipment reprocessing.
Coordinates and manages repairs and loaners with Biomedical Engineering, ensuring repairs are documented and expedited.
Notifies appropriate clinical practitioners regarding power equipment availability.
Follows up with clinical staff on any handling issues that affect quality.
Operates all production equipment and technology used for reprocessing medical devices (washers, sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, incubators, instrument tracking system).
Performs technician duties during staffing shortages, increased workload, or to expedite priority assignments.
May assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of shift Supervisor and/or manager.
Assists in the development of departmental procedures and policies related to endoscope reprocessing.
Maintains appropriate certifications and stays informed of industry changes, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
Conducts a minimum of two annual in-services on practice updates.
