About The Position

ASRC Federal System Solutions (AFSS) is seeking a ORION Spacecraft Technician Machinist, Staff at Kennedy Space Center, FL. Technicians operate and maintain systems and equipment used in the developing, fabricating, testing, producing, assembling, and sustaining the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) used to transport astronauts to interplanetary destinations beyond low Earth orbit such as the Moon and Mars. Technicians in this occupational family may have a wide breadth of knowledge in various Facility and Ground Support Equipment (GSE) & spacecraft systems and/or a specific depth of knowledge in a craft, system, or subsystem. Excludes quality assurance inspectors and material handlers.

Requirements

  • Proficient in the operation of manual machine tools to include vertical knee mill (Bridgeport), engine lathe, drill press, band saws, grinders, metal shear, sheet metal brake and other tools common to a machine shop.
  • Experience in the operation, setup, and programming of CNC machine tools to include 3 and 4 axis mill and 2 axis turning center, utilizing CAD/CAM software and G-code.
  • Proficient utilizing precision measuring tools such as dial calipers, micrometers, surface plates and other measuring instruments utilized in precision machining operations.
  • High School diploma, or equivalent experience/combined education, with additional technical training sufficient to perform required basic calculations, electronic/mechanical assembly/test, computer operations, etc. and more than 5 years of experience.
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a range of duties in the mechanical, electromechanical, and Facilities GSE when constructing and assembling spacecraft and associated ground support equipment.
  • Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, schematics, engineering documents, work authorization documents and other written or verbal instructions.
  • Constructs, assembles, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, diagnoses, repairs and maintain equipment, components and subcomponents, devices, and systems in accordance with testing, engineering and installation instructions.
  • Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format.
  • Performs alignment checks; adjusts, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions. Uses various measuring devices to include, Micrometers, Calipers, and laser measuring devices.
  • Carry out corrosion control treatments on metal and other corrosive alloys.
  • Plan, layout using a variety of tools and precision measuring instruments, make shop computations and understanding working properties of metals, alloys and composite materials. Install and align cutters, dies, drills, guides and holding devices. Constructing ground support equipment from metal, alloys and other composite materials.
  • Aptitude in Electrical theory and electrical system Fabrication, wire termination and Harness build up
  • Perform Rigging inspections and rigging in support of lifts within a manufacturing area.
  • Complete, update and maintain all required documentation, reports, etc., manually or in digital databases.
