Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
  • Knowledge of special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Familiarity with the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process.
  • CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Educator Certification in Special Education (EC-12) is preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Individualized Plans: Collaborate with the ARD committee to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) focused on orientation and mobility needs.
  • Provide Specialized Instruction: Teach students skills for safe and effective navigation, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, environmental assessment, and use of assistive technology such as GPS devices or low-vision aids.
  • Monitor Progress: Collect and analyze data to assess student growth and adjust instructional strategies to ensure students meet their orientation and mobility goals.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families to integrate orientation and mobility skills into the student’s overall educational plan. Actively participate in ARD meetings and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Promote Safety and Independence: Develop and implement plans that prioritize student safety in various environments, including school, home, and the community, while fostering independence and confidence.
  • Support Transition Goals: Prepare students for post-secondary environments by teaching community travel, public transportation use, and workplace navigation as part of their transition services.
