About The Position

The E. H. Gentry Facility is one of the most distinct and comprehensive education and rehabilitation programs in the United States. The O&M Specialist will work with students and community referrals to foster independence and confidence through specialized travel training. This role involves assessing individual needs and implementing customized instructional strategies to empower consumers to navigate their environments safely and effectively, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application to help students achieve personal and vocational goals.

Requirements

• Must be certified in Orientation & Mobility by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or be enrolled in an Orientation and Mobility program and earn certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
• Must possess a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized O&M evaluations and plan programs including low vision travel aids and pre-cane skills.
• Teach individualized O&M skills to all scheduled students for familiar and unfamiliar environments.
• Provide O&M instruction to consumers in their home, job site, and/or community within surrounding counties.
• Transport students to community locations to provide instruction in realistic learning environments.
• Make and record observations regarding student progress, attendance, and social behavior.
• Become familiar with and utilize the Gentry database.
• Prepare meaningful lesson plans geared toward assessed needs and vocational goals.
• Maintain inventory of low vision and mobility equipment as assigned.
• Actively participate in and initiate student staffing as needed.
• Participate in training sessions and provide in-service training upon request.
• Provide both direct instruction and consultation to students with visual impairments.
• Complete Basics of Blindness and Low Vision / Deaf 101 e-Learning course and Orientation and Mobility Certification within the first 12 months.
• Submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB upon offer of employment.
