About The Position

Responsibility for day – to day activities related to recovering organs for transplant, including but not limited to potential donor referrals, donor evaluation, authorization process, and comprehensive donor management. Activities include, but are not limited to, being knowledgeable of individual hospital policies related to the donation of all anatomical gifts; able to identify key personnel who are capable of improving and maintain a hospital’s level of participation in facilitating potential organ and tissue donors; and performing activities related to the initial and surgical recovery elements of the donation process.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Nursing or biological science or related experience required.
  • Licensed as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, paramedic, or applicable experience and related training preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of critical care experience
  • Must obtain and maintain ACLS and PALS certification within one year of employment
  • Current Driver’s license required
  • Excellent oral, written, and documentation skills
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and to represent the organization publicly
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required
  • Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload
  • Ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Provides on-call coverage for organ and tissue donation
  • Provides assessment of organ and tissue donors.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive plan of care for complex patients to achieve successful organ and tissue donation under guidance of preceptor
  • Provides input and assists in the facilitation of the referral/donor process, and the organ recovery process using knowledge of critical care principles such as hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, and administration of critical care medications under guidance of preceptor
  • Completes required organ and/or tissue donor documentation in a timely manner under guidance of preceptor
  • Obtain authorization and medical social history screening of organ and tissue donors, as needed under guidance of preceptor
  • Applies age-specific patient management for heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, small intestine, and lung donors under guidance of preceptor
  • Allocates organs in compliance with STA and OPTN policy under guidance of preceptor
  • Assists the Surgical Services Coordinators in the operating room with organ preservation and organ labeling & packaging under guidance of preceptor
  • Communicates with hospital services to ensure effective donor follow-up under guidance of preceptor
  • Attends Designated Requestor training annually
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Represents Southwest Transplant Alliance with national and regional procurement and transplant organizations
  • Independently provides clinical training and education to hospital staff as requested by Hospital Services
  • Collaborates with Hospital Services for death record review and hospital education as requested
  • Works with hospital, staff, and the public to assure that appropriate patients and families are provided the opportunity of organ and tissue donation
