About The Position

The Ordinary Seaman carries out general marine cleaning, maintenance, navigational watchkeeping duties, and other manual labor as required. This role involves preparing cargo for lift, checking loads, giving signals to the Crane Operator, and manually lifting and moving equipment. The Ordinary Seaman is also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the vessel, assisting with spill cleanup, and ensuring tools and equipment are kept in good condition and properly stored. Additionally, the role includes assisting in the care and maintenance of the vessel's machinery and equipment, operating cargo handling gear, and assisting with the care and protection of drill pipes and other tubulars. Responsibilities extend to assembling, dismantling, and maintaining deck machinery and other mechanical equipment, preparing and cleaning deck surfaces for painting, and performing painting tasks as directed. Maintaining a safe work area, stowing tools and equipment, participating in emergency drills, and standing navigational watch under supervision are also key duties. The Ordinary Seaman is expected to attend safety meetings and participate in pre-job meetings.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid STCW 95 unlimited AB certificate with relevant Flag State Endorsement.
  • Valid STCW 95 Proficiency in Survival Craft certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all work according to agreed expectations of both internal and external customers and contributes actively to continual improvement activities.
  • Prepares cargo for lift by attaching slings through shackles or other attaching devices.
  • Checks loads for clearance, obstructions, balance, and proper attachment.
  • Gives or relays hand signals and/or radio signals to Crane Operator to control the lift and movement of the load.
  • Manually lifts, carries, and moves marine equipment, tools, and materials from place to place as required.
  • Removes waste, debris, and accumulated trash from decks, stairs, compartments, and other areas of the vessel and dispose of properly.
  • Sweeps and washes decks, bulkheads, and structures using brooms, mops, rags, brushes, air, and high-pressure water hoses.
  • Assists in cleaning up spills and accumulated waste and takes all necessary actions to prevent tripping and slipping hazards.
  • Keeps marine tools in good condition, properly maintained, and stored when not in use.
  • Keeps lines, hoses, slings, etc. coiled and other materials properly stored.
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of the vessel’s marine machinery and equipment using proper tools and following safety rules and procedures.
  • Operates air hoists, hydraulic hoists, chain hoists, and other cargo handling gear to lift or shift heavy equipment.
  • Assists in the care and protection of drill pipes, marine riser joints, and other tubular using such things as brushes, rabbits, thread protectors, and pipe dopes.
  • Assists in assembling, dismantling, and maintenance of deck machinery, pumps, drilling tools, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Prepares and cleans deck surfaces, superstructures, bulkheads, etc., prior to priming and painting.
  • Paints prepared surfaces as directed (i.e. applies coats of primer, paint, and varnish with rollers and spray guns in accordance with painting specifications).
  • Maintains a safe area for task assigned.
  • Stows all tools and equipment at end of each tour to avoid safety hazards for other operations.
  • Participates in emergency safety drills and responds to emergency situations as per assigned duties on the Station Bill.
  • Reports any incidents, potential hazards, or abnormal situations to supervisors.
  • Stands navigational watch as required and under the supervision of the Officer on Watch.
  • Attends weekly safety meetings and actively participates in all pre ‐ job meetings as required.
