About The Position

The OR Technician stocks operating room suites, scrub basin preparatory areas, and equipment needed for operating room cases. The technician cleans and terminally disinfects or sterilizes scopes, instruments, and equipment, maintaining documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies. The role works with the operating room team to transport supplies, equipment, and other essentials to the operating room suite so the team can perform procedures. The position also supports sanitation, stocking, transport, instrument and equipment processing, and communication with operating room staff. The technician must be able to work independently and collaboratively, handle multiple tasks, and remain alert to signs of patient distress during transfers. The role involves exposure to stressful situations and potentially infectious materials, and requires the ability to move about the facility and perform the physical functions described in the posting.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification within one month of hire or transfer.
Six months of experience as an operating room technician, including 60 scope cleanings documented by the employee.
Completion of Advanced GI Technical Specialist (AGST) through the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) at the time of hire or transfer.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology and abbreviations sufficient to understand information and instructions.
Interpersonal skills to communicate clearly with individuals and groups at all levels.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently and positively with others, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or an appropriate substitute if required.
Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform the job functions described.
Adequate vision and hearing, with or without assistive devices.
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, with possible frequent stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
Ability to handle, reach, grasp, finger, and feel, potentially repeating these movements regularly or frequently.
Follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of basic nursing care principles, standards, isolation, and sterile techniques.
College coursework in medical terminology.
Patient Care Technician experience.
Sterile Processing experience.

Responsibilities

Sanitize operating rooms after each case and maintain cleanliness of work areas and scrub sinks.
Stock work areas and operating rooms with sanitation supplies, linens, solutions, and specimen containers.
Transport items and occasionally patients between the operating room and other departments.
Use knowledge of flexible scope reprocessing and handle trays of sterile instruments and sterile packages after training and competency assessment.
Relay materials to operating rooms through the case cart and tube systems in a timely manner.
Access the supply room as appropriate to stock supplies.
Process instruments and equipment that are not sent to the Sterile Processing Department.
Carry a phone, communicate, and answer appropriately.
Receive assignments by communicating with the OR front desk and communicate with the circulating nurse for assigned rooms.
Recognize signs of distress in patients during transfers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
