About The Position

Under the supervision of the nursing department's management, the OR Technician assists the perioperative care team in many aspects of patient care. This includes patient care assistance, care of the environment, transportation of patients, supplies, and equipment. The role involves interacting with other departments, performing cleaning duties, restocking and ordering supplies, setting up equipment, and providing support for para-nursing and housekeeping functions in the Operating Room and PACU.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate Required
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification within the first two weeks of employment.
  • Certified Nurse Aide / Assistant (CNA) - State Department for Aging and Disability Services (KS), Department of Health & Senior Services (MO) - Includes licenses for all other states
  • Successful completion of a nurse assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques involved in performing general operating room services and adapting or modifying standards of operating room practices for care of specific medical cases required.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certification may be required for certain patient care settings or populations. Specific information and the timeframe in which such certification must be attained will be provided by the department director/manager/supervisor at time of hire/transfer into department.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile field.
  • Illustrates proper technique for transporting and positioning patients safely.
  • Displays understanding of proper body mechanics.
  • Demonstrates special positions and/or bed positions.
  • Recognizes the area of surgical prep (clean or sterile).
  • Responsible for maintaining environmental cleanliness standards of the operating rooms and ancillary areas.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for surgical skins preps.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Assesses case schedule and determines equipment and supply needs.
  • Sets up equipment and gathers supplies.
  • Completes equipment maintenance, checks and repairs, and makes adjustments necessary for normal and efficient operation.
  • Monitors equipment temperature to ensure proper performance.
  • Contacts maintenance if repairs are needed.
  • Works closely with the machines to recognize potential problems and learns to repair small problems.
  • Fills out work requests when needed.
  • Participates in department-specific quality improvement projects.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
