Requirements

High School Diploma or GED, required
Requires one of the following: Successful completion of a nationally accredited education program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization, OR Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, OR Provides evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring between 2011 and 2015; OR Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to a Surgical technologist
Received education in an accredited program for licensed practical nursing
Minimum 2 years experience as a surgical technologist, required
Minimum 1 year hospital experience as an OR Technologist, required
Current Surgical Technologist certification required (AST or NCCT), required; OR Licensed as LPN by New York State Office of Professions, required
BLS required within 6 months of hire date

Responsibilities

Scrubbing for surgical cases.
Handling instruments, supplies, medication, media, specimens, and instrument cases.
Assuming responsibility for call duties when fully trained.
Demonstrating the assimilation of the principles of asepsis; and patient and staff safety in performance of duties.
Managing the surgical field efficiently to assure minimal waste of supplies and equipment.
Maintaining supplies and equipment in assigned specialties.
Demonstrating skills in scrubbing for all surgical specialties.
Using past clinical experience and knowledge to assist in solving immediate patient care problems.
Working with ORT Coordinators to assist in implementation of new policies or procedures and provides support for those already established.
Working with ORT Coordinators and Team Leaders to assure the procedure cards remain accurate.
Assisting in validating OR personnel in specialty equipment.
Assisting with the maintenance of inventory for assigned specialties as directed by ORT Coordinator or Team Leader.
Using supplies and institutional resources in a financially responsible manner.
Ensuring maintenance of all assigned specialty equipment.
Working with others to identify budget/replacement needs of surgical specialty supplies and equipment.
Actively participating in product, supply, and instrument evaluation with cost and quality considerations.
Maintaining an orderly, clean, and safe work environment and personal appearance.
Teaching new ORTs majority of specialties.
Coordinating training with ORT Coordinator and Nurse Educator.
Serving as a mentor and resource for other staff members.
Participating in staffing patterns that reflect variable demands in service.
Exhibiting knowledge of skills, importance of teamwork and consideration of others.
Demonstrating a positive attitude, using flexibility and innovation while problem-solving.
Demonstrating collaborative practice with all members of the healthcare team.
Participating in departmental/organizational committees as assigned.

Participating in continued education through attendance and presentations at in-service sessions.
Assisting in evaluating new equipment and training policies.
