About The Position

Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, this role coordinates the flow of patients, providers, and OR personnel through the ORs. It provides communication services to physicians and OR personnel, taking and relaying messages. The role also books same-day OR cases via electronic booking or typed booking slip and works with the OR Charge RN and/or designee at the Davol OR desk, performing related duties as assigned. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with physicians, OR personnel, and others.
  • A high degree of customer service skills is required.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology in order to be familiar with OR procedures, laboratory tests, etc.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to learn department software to enter and access information.
  • One to three months of job-related experience (including orientation) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Answers telephone and uses appropriate telephone techniques and proper identification.
  • Takes and relays messages for physicians and OR personnel, provides paging services to residents and physicians, and serves as a communication contact for the OR (e.g., receiving updated laboratory reports, calling of X-rays).
  • Reviews the surgery schedule and notifies the nursing unit of the patient and surgery time.
  • Notifies the physician and support medical team of the surgery time.
  • Dispatches Orderlies to transport the patient from the nursing unit to the OR.
  • Coordinates the assignment of OR cases to the rooms, notifying OR personnel of changes in the surgery schedule, delays, etc.
  • Notifies appropriate nursing personnel of changes in the OR schedule, as well as support departments such as Anesthesia, Perfusion, etc.
  • Contacts physician’s offices to inform them of assigned surgery times.
  • Coordinates the transportation of patients from the OR to recovery areas by notifying Orderlies and verifying that appropriate transportation vehicles are available.
  • Maintains records of all cases processed and assists in generating activity statistics.
  • Assists in updating patient profiles.
  • Orders and stocks needed paperwork and office supplies in all perioperative clerical areas.
  • Orders and stocks dietary goods in all perioperative areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
