About The Position
The Optometry Technician will be responsible for obtaining and accurately documenting comprehensive patient histories, reviewing and updating patient information, and accurately entering and maintaining patient information in the EMR. The role involves performing various clinical and diagnostic tests, including measuring visual acuity, performing pinhole testing, instilling ophthalmic medications, performing color vision and stereo testing, measuring lens power, performing Amsler Grid and Schirmer testing, evaluating pupils, estimating anterior chamber depth, performing Tono-Pen tonometry, performing refractions, visual field testing, OCT testing, and Lenstar measurements. The technician will also maintain knowledge of commonly prescribed ophthalmic medications. Additionally, responsibilities include performing routine maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and equipment, completing calibration, stocking examination rooms, monitoring medication expiration dates, and disinfecting equipment according to protocols. Depending on experience and training, additional skills such as basic slit-lamp examination, corneal topography, measurement of axial length, keratometry, and refractometry may be included. The role requires providing high-quality, compassionate service, maintaining a positive and professional attitude, demonstrating flexibility, meeting attendance expectations, and maintaining confidentiality.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Proficiency with computers

- Minimum of 2 years of optometry experience preferred
- EMR experience preferred

Responsibilities
- Obtain and accurately document comprehensive patient histories
- Review and update patient information as appropriate
- Accurately enter and maintain patient information in the EMR
- Follow established computer and documentation procedures
- Measure and accurately document distance and near visual acuity using age- and education-appropriate testing methods
- Perform pinhole testing
- Properly instill ophthalmic medications and understand indications and contraindications for dilation and corneal anesthesia
- Perform color vision and stereo testing
- Measure and accurately document current lens power using a lensometer
- Perform and document Amsler Grid and Schirmer testing
- Perform tear film and dry-eye testing
- Evaluate pupils and assess pupil responses
- Estimate anterior chamber depth
- Perform Tono-Pen tonometry
- Perform refractions
- Perform visual field testing
- Perform OCT testing
- Perform Lenstar measurements for cataract surgery
- Maintain knowledge of commonly prescribed ophthalmic medications
- Perform routine maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and equipment
- Complete required equipment calibration and maintain appropriate logs
- Stock examination rooms and assigned clinical areas
- Monitor medication expiration dates and maintain appropriate inventory
- Disinfect and maintain examination rooms and clinical equipment according to established protocols
- Follow EIU eye-drop inventory guidelines
