About The Position

This position offers weekday primary eye care in Sisseton, South Dakota, located in the scenic glacial lakes country. The role involves serving approximately 7,000 tribal members at the Woodrow Wilson Keeble Memorial Health Care Center, a modern Indian Health Service outpatient facility. Optometry services are integrated within a Patient Centered Medical Home model, working alongside other healthcare disciplines. The practice focuses on full-scope primary eye care for patients of all ages, including examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up. The typical patient load is 12-16 patients per day with 30-minute appointments. Prescriptions are made from the facility formulary, and referrals are managed through Purchased & Referred Care. Patient education on eye disease and diabetic eye health is also a key component. Documentation is managed through an electronic health record, with charts to be completed within 72 hours.

Requirements

• Doctor of Optometry from an ACOE-accredited program
• Active, unrestricted optometry license from any U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory — a South Dakota license is not required
• One-year residency, or at least one year of optometry practice within the last 24 months
• Electronic health record experience

Responsibilities

• Full-scope primary eye care for patients of all ages: examination, diagnosis, treatment plan, follow-up and consultation
• Routine, diagnostic, consultative and urgent optometric care, typically 12–16 patients per day in 30-minute appointments
• Prescribe from the facility formulary and refer through Purchased & Referred Care when specialty care is needed
• Patient education on eye disease, diabetic eye health and prevention
• Document in the electronic health record and complete charts within 72 hours
