About The Position

This position is responsible for examining, diagnosing and treating parts of the visual system for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients of Oyáte Health Center (OHC). The role involves providing optometry services including diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic care. Responsibilities include interviewing patients, reviewing medical history, performing diagnostic tests, and documenting findings in the electronic health record. The Optometrist will examine eyes using various instruments and pharmaceutical agents, diagnose optometric and ocular problems, and develop treatment plans. Treatment may involve prescribing corrective lenses, vision training, or pharmacological means, including the use of topical and oral therapeutic medicines. The position also includes fitting contact lenses and eyeglasses, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, providing low-vision rehabilitation and vision therapy, and educating patients and other health professionals. Additionally, the role assists with budget development, performance improvement reports, and collaborates with grant programs for patient screenings. Participation in quality improvement activities and ensuring accurate documentation for billing and referrals are also key aspects of the role. Compliance with HIPAA is mandatory.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) Degree.
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience.
  • Permanent, full, and unrestricted Optometry license in any U.S. State or Territory.
  • Full and unrestricted therapeutics license.
  • Successfully pass a criminal and background check and a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Compliance with Employee Health Procedure, including required immunizations (MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Influenza, T-dap, and COVID-19 vaccination).

Responsibilities

  • Providing optometry services to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services.
  • Interviewing and examining patients, reviewing past medical history and requesting/performing diagnostic tests to make clinical diagnoses.
  • Documenting patient history including complaint, symptoms, ocular health, medication usage, medical and family history, and current vision aide.
  • Examining eyes using observation, pharmaceutical agents, and instruments to determine visual perception, acuity, coordination, and focus.
  • Diagnosing optometric and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and adnexa.
  • Detecting neuromuscular impairment and anomalies of binocular functions.
  • Documenting diagnosis and treatment plan, including referrals, therapeutic prescriptions, and long-term medical management.
  • Treating visual disorders through examination, prescription of corrective lenses, vision training, or pharmacological means.
  • Using all forms of topical ophthalmic therapeutic medicines and oral therapeutic medicines to manage pathology and trauma.
  • Treating unusual visual disorders through application of advanced optometric techniques.
  • Prescribing and fitting vision aides such as contact lenses and eyeglasses.
  • Maintaining communication with ophthalmology, optical, and support staff to optimize clinical care and service.
  • Referring patients requiring medical, surgical, and/or diagnostic services.
  • Providing low-vision rehabilitation and vision therapy to improve visual issues.
  • Providing vision and eye care education and training to other health professionals, patients, and the community.
  • Assisting with the development and monitoring of the optometry/eye care budget and making recommendations for resource allocation.
  • Developing and maintaining performance improvement reports.
  • Collaborating with grant programs and community organizations to ensure screening of children and diabetic patients and data collection.
  • Participating in quality improvement activities such as GPRA, PI, IPC, infection control, and case management.
  • Utilizing EHR with accurate timely notes for billing and referrals.
  • Complying with federal laws and regulations as required by HIPAA.
  • Performing related duties.
