About The Position

We are looking for a licensed Optometrist who wants to join our team at FCI Loretto in Loretto, Pennsylvania. This is a flexible, part-time role with a steady weekly schedule and a meaningful patient population. You will provide routine eye care to an underserved population that depends on you for their vision health.

Requirements

  • A licensed Optometrist who works independently and brings sound clinical judgment to every exam.
  • Efficient and organized — able to keep an exam schedule moving while maintaining quality.
  • Comfortable working with patients from a wide range of cultural, regional, and ethnic backgrounds, and able to maintain a professional, secure environment in a correctional setting.
  • Reliable and committed to consistent weekly coverage.
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of six months of experience practicing as an Optometrist.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Pennsylvania Optometry license.
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
  • Professional liability insurance of at least $100,000.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional peers.
  • Ability to pass a background check and complete the facility’s security orientation (with annual refresher training).
  • Free of infectious diseases; proof of TB skin test or chest X-ray, plus annual flu vaccination and TB screening.
  • Professional attire that meets the facility’s dress code.

Nice To Haves

  • Correctional experience is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye exams on patients referred by the medical staff.
  • Diagnose eye conditions, perform tonometry exams, and remove foreign objects from the eye as needed.
  • Prescribe corrective lenses and frames; fit eyeglasses and adjust frames as needed.
  • Provide clear, legible written reports for every patient, including physical findings, diagnoses, and recommendations for treatment and follow-up care.
  • Adjust exam equipment as needed and complete 20–25 scheduled exams on a full session day.
  • Document each exam in the Bureau of Prisons’ electronic medical record system.
  • Practice in accordance with state law and standards generally accepted within the field of optometry.
