About The Position

The Optometric Technician is responsible for assisting the optometrist in providing high-quality patient care. This role involves performing preliminary clinical testing, obtaining patient histories, assisting with diagnostic procedures, educating patients, and ensuring efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. The ideal candidate is compassionate, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering exceptional patient care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience with patient intake, insurance verification, and healthcare scheduling preferred.
  • Experience with revenue cycle functions (eligibility, copays, basic authorizations, and patient collections) preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired is preferred but not required training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients and prepare them for their examination.
  • Obtain and document patient medical, ocular, medication, and family histories.
  • Measure visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and perform preliminary vision testing.
  • Conduct diagnostic testing.
  • Administer eye drops as permitted by state law and office protocol.
  • Accurately document findings in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Prepare examination rooms and maintain cleanliness of equipment.
  • Educate patients regarding vision status, treatment plans, follow-up care with low vision services.
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate referrals as needed.
  • Assist with insurance verification, authorizations, and billing support when required.
  • Maintain inventory of clinical supplies and notify management of shortages.
  • Follow OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control guidelines at all times.
  • Demonstrates kindness, patience, and empathy when working with patients, including those with diverse needs such as vision loss.
  • Shows a strong willingness to learn, grow, and adapt in a changing healthcare environment; open to training processes, and industry knowledge.
  • Communicates clearly and compassionately, with the ability to build trust and provide supportive, patient-centered service.
  • Approaches work with strong organizational habits and the ability to manage multiple priorities; scheduling and administrative skills can be developed with training.
  • Works well both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Brings a positive attitude and problem-solving mindset, with flexibility to adjust to new workflows or responsibilities.
  • Basic familiarity with office technology (e.g., computers, phone systems); experience with EMR systems, Microsoft Office, and healthcare processes is a plus, but not required.

  • Must wear all the protective equipment required by the department.
  • Must follow all company policies and procedures including departmental safety policies.
