About The Position

This role involves assisting optometrists in patient care and maintaining the clinical environment. Responsibilities include escorting patients, preparing them for examinations by obtaining vital signs, documenting patient information, and measuring lens powers. The assistant will also aid in various vision tests, maintain the cleanliness and functionality of equipment, record clinical data, schedule patient appointments, and provide basic patient education as directed. The job is full-time with flexible and varied hours, and does not offer telecommuting. Minimal travel is expected.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required.
  • One year of experience as an Optometric Assistant, or Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Possess basic knowledge and skill appropriate to education and training.
  • Telephone and computer skills necessary.
  • Maintains Universal Precautions.
  • Flexible in accepting work assignments.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to seek and utilize supervision appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse population using effective and professional customer service skills.
  • Ability to function as a committed and reliable team member.
  • Able to maintain patient confidentiality as defined by HIPPA regulations.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. frequently.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and assist in preparing them for the Optometrist, including obtaining vital signs, height and weight measurements, determining the reason for the visit, documenting chief complaint and HPI, and measuring and recording lens powers using a lensometer.
  • Assist with vision testing, including Visual Acuity, Stereo Vision, Color Vision, Visual Field Testing, Ocular Motility Testing, Auto-Refraction, and Auto-Tonometry.
  • Maintain the clinical environment by cleaning and disinfecting exam rooms and work areas, participating in procedure room checks, refrigerator temperature checks, medication expiration date checks, and quality control assessments for blood glucose machines.
  • Maintain equipment appropriately and report any malfunctions to the Optometrist or Optical Coordinator.
  • Record and maintain accurate clinical data, prepare charts with updated information, and file encounters, lab/diagnostic test results, consult reports, and hospital information chronologically, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Schedule patients for testing procedures ordered by the Optometrist and for referrals to outside agencies/providers, and provide follow-up work for all referrals.
  • Assist with tracking processes per protocol.
  • Provide limited patient education as directed by the Optometrist or Optical Coordinator.
  • Participate in team meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
