About The Position

The Optometric Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Optometrist and ensuring the smooth operation of the clinical environment. This position involves direct patient interaction, assisting with examinations, maintaining patient records, and managing the clinical workspace. The role requires attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Duties may evolve over time, and flexibility is key.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • One year of experience as an Optometric Assistant or Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Possess basic knowledge and skill appropriate to education and training.
  • Telephone and computer skills necessary.
  • Maintains Universal Precautions.
  • Flexible in accepting work assignments.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to seek and utilize supervision appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse population using effective and professional customer service skills.
  • Ability to function as a committed and reliable team member.
  • Able to maintain patient confidentiality as defined by HIPPA regulations.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. frequently.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and assist in preparing them for the Optometrist.
  • Obtain vital signs, including height and weight measurements.
  • Determine the reason for the patient visit and document chief complaint and complete and accurate HPI.
  • Measure and record lens powers using a lensometer.
  • Assist with various vision tests, including Visual Acuity, Stereo Vision, Color Vision, Visual Field Testing, and Ocular Motility Testing.
  • Perform Auto-Refraction and Auto-Tonometry.
  • Maintain the clinical environment by cleaning and disinfecting exam rooms and work areas.
  • Participate in procedure room checks, refrigerator temperature checks, medication expiration date checks, and quality control assessments.
  • Maintain equipment and report any malfunctions.
  • Record and maintain accurate clinical data.
  • Prepare patient charts with updated information for provider documentation.
  • File encounters, lab/diagnostic test results, consult reports, and hospital information.
  • Schedule patients for testing procedures and referrals.
  • Provide follow-up work for all referrals and assist with tracking processes.
  • Provide limited patient education as directed by the Optometrist or Optical Coordinator.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
