Opto-Mechanical Engineer IV (E4)

Applied Materials•Santa Clara, CA
•$147,000 - $202,500

About The Position

Applied Materials is hiring an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and modify mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. The role applies physics, mathematics, and materials science to resolve mechanical problems; design custom tooling and processes; and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of components and assemblies throughout the product life cycle. The engineer also oversees manufacturing and installation processes, coordinates procurement and assembly of mechanical components, and identifies sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues. The engineer leads or designs opto-mechanical solutions for complex subsystems, supports prototype and production optical systems, and serves as a technical lead or subject-matter expert on cross-functional program teams. The position is based in Santa Clara, California, includes travel of 10% of the time, and is eligible for relocation. The role is full-time and offers a salary range of $147,000 to $202,500.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 7–10 years of experience.
  • Subject-matter expertise with CAD software, thermodynamics, sheet metal design, material selection, manufacturing methods, GD&T, flow analysis, and/or Design for Excellence principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Applied Materials product life cycle, including prototyping, packaging, material selection, and manufacturing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or design opto-mechanical solutions for complex subsystems.
  • Identify and troubleshoot complex mechanical problems with limited to no supervision.
  • Develop detailed component and assembly drawings that meet tight tolerancing requirements across production and prototype configurations.
  • Perform mechanical analyses to ensure performance stability under operational and environmental conditions.
  • Design sub-assemblies to achieve sub-micron alignment and long-term stability.
  • Define and optimize sub-assemblies to maintain system performance across required temperature operating ranges.
  • Define and own the opto-mechanical interface between optical, mechanical, and electrical subsystems.
  • Lead integration and alignment activities for prototype and production optical systems.
  • Develop alignment procedures, optical bench setups, and calibration workflows.
  • Define, coordinate, and perform engineering tests; generate test reports; specify and review engineering documentation; and specify or perform complex engineering analyses.
  • Develop, design, or modify complex engineering layouts, schematics, drawings, and specifications.
  • Design for manufacturability and high-volume manufacturing, including developing key suppliers.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers about complex mechanical issues for specific projects.
  • Generate product specifications and drive the product design life cycle.
  • Serve as a technical lead or subject-matter expert on cross-functional program teams, communicating design status, risks, and trade-offs to program management and stakeholders.
  • Design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes.
  • Oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations.
  • Coordinate procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Potential eligibility for a bonus program.
  • Potential eligibility for a stock award program.
  • Relocation eligible.
