About The Position

Under general supervision, performs all conventional aspects of the functional area subject matter. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Plans, schedules, and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Provides technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers. The Opto-Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the design and modeling of mechanical components to interface with optical elements such as lenses, mirrors, diffractive elements and filters. The candidate will design and model the mechanical means to mount and position these elements in an optical system. The designer will also need to be able to develop detailed drawings of these optical elements and overall optical system as well as fabrication and assembly drawings for the mechanical hardware and optical assemblies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent 7+ years of related experience
  • Specific knowledge related to the mechanical design mounts and modeling of opto-mechanical systems.
  • Proficient in CAD software (Solid Works, NX).
  • Ability to work all phases of opto-mechanical subsystems from the conceptual design layout, package prototyping, fixture/tooling design, development of mechanical attachment methods/tools for optimal optical alignment including system level assembly and interface drawings (ICD).
  • Prior experience with NASA or other work related to space flight hardware.

  • Proficient in NX or SolidWorks computer aided software tool
  • Active TS/SCI clearance is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and modeling of mechanical components to interface with optical elements.
  • Design and model the mechanical means to mount and position optical elements in an optical system.
  • Develop detailed drawings of optical elements and overall optical system.
  • Develop fabrication and assembly drawings for mechanical hardware and optical assemblies.
  • Develop assembly and test procedures.
  • Support all levels of optical subsystem integration and tests and report as necessary.
  • Support trade studies and recommend system architecture and design approach.
  • Lead the development of design concepts for optic handling equipment.
  • Support development of test support equipment.
  • Conduct analysis and evaluation of a design concept to produce realistic assessment of development and manufacturing risks.
  • Develop strategies for mitigating risks.
  • Work with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations and support project level reviews.
