About The Position

The Optics Technician provides technical support for all aspects of the RPO ISO 9001 Quality Management System. May be required to assist with inspection of material and product while creating, maintaining, and controlling the related records and procedures per customer requirements. May be required to provide guidance and direction in completing a variety of tasks in support of Operations. Occasionally performs related processes such as product cleaning, sorting, and defect classification. Must be capable of supporting various manufacturing, coating, and assembly operations. Ensures the support of the shipment of products with data gathering, analysis, reporting, and conformance verifications. Must be capable of initiating and supporting trouble-shooting and problem-solving actions. May work in a cleanroom environment and low-light areas.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Optics, Engineering Technology, Quality, Statistics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1–3 years of experience supporting optical inspection, optical metrology, quality, or technician activities within an optical manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, customer specifications, and industry or military standards.
  • Experience developing inspection plans, sampling plans, inspection procedures, or quality documentation based on customer and internal requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using Minitab or similar statistical analysis software preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and provide guidance or on-the-job training to coworkers.
  • Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to perform repetitive inspection and testing activities with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Understanding of Quality philosophies and standards such as the PDCA cycle, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Continual Improvement, Gage R&R, ISO 9001 preferred.
  • Ability to create project plans and interpret work instructions.
  • Ability to interact well and provide direction for co-workers.
  • High tolerance for repetitious inspection and testing.
  • Ability to use basic mechanical inspection equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop sampling plans for specific optical components using engineering drawings, specifications, and reference materials.
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering, Quality, and Production Departments to provide technical updates, answer questions, and resolve day-to-day production issues.
  • Perform optical metrology and inspection activities to verify product conformance.
  • Support root cause investigations, recommend corrective actions, and assist with the disposition of non-conforming products.
  • Attend and support Manufacturing Review Board (MRB) meetings by providing inspection data and technical findings.
  • Develop inspection procedures from engineering drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Accurately document test results, inspection findings, and labor transactions within computerized systems.
  • Interpret coating performance data and metrology results to evaluate product quality.
  • Interpret work instructions and provide on-the-job training (OJT) to operators and technicians.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, measuring microscopes, Pearl Scopes, beam deviation equipment, and transmission testing equipment.
  • Perform visual inspections to identify cosmetic and functional defects in accordance with established standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to inspection methods, product quality, and manufacturing processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
