About The Position

We are seeking an Optician to support the Veteran community in the Baltimore, MD area. This position is open to all candidates, including Locum or Traveling professionals. The role involves assisting Veteran beneficiaries with their eyewear needs, verifying prescriptions, filling medically necessary prescriptions, conducting on-site optical fitting and dispensary services, and performing minor repairs and adjustments to eyewear. Requirements

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently, without sponsorship.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be certified by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate’s in Ophthalmic Technology is a plus.
  • Previous experience with the VA is a plus.
  • If selected, candidates will need to complete credentialing and onboarding requirements consistent with VA medical staff processes.

Responsibilities

  • Helping Veteran beneficiaries by greeting them, determining lifestyle needs for prescription eyewear, assisting with frame selection, and making recommendations.
  • Verify eyeglass prescription specifications provided by the VAMC Optometry or Ophthalmology clinics.
  • Fill medically necessary eyeglass prescriptions as written by the privileged VA eye care provider.
  • Ensure medical justification is within prescriptions for any add-ons.
  • Communicate with primary eye care providers for prescription updates.
  • Conduct on-site optical fitting and dispensary services.
  • Perform measurements for pupillary distances, segment heights, base curves and review final frame selection choice with the Veteran beneficiary.
  • Making minor repairs and adjustments to eyewear as needed.
