Optician - Full-time - Hartford
About The Position
The Optician is responsible for interpreting prescriptions, assisting patients in selecting eyewear, taking optical measurements, and fitting all eyewear. They will also instruct patients on the cleaning and handling of eyewear and evaluate lens types based on patient needs. Additionally, the Optician will repair, adjust, and dispense prescription lenses and frames, ensuring quality prior to dispensing. This role also involves assisting with inventory maintenance, department equipment upkeep, and maintaining accurate patient records, including charges and third-party coverage. The Optician must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
Requirements
- High School Graduate.
- Typically requires 1 year of experience in an optician role that includes dispensing eyeglasses, knowledge of equipment, lenses, frames and new optometry technology.
- Basic computer skills including experience using mainframe or personal computer, which includes Microsoft Office and Windows applications.
- Good customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly with staff and patients through personal contact, telephone and writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and other allied health care personnel.
- Must possess a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to apply written guidelines and work practices to make decisions and solve problems.
- Skilled in the instruction of cleaning and handling eyewear.
- NC/GA Divisions: Licensed as an Optician by the North Carolina State Board of Opticians required.
Responsibilities
- Interprets prescriptions and assists patients in selecting appropriate eyewear.
- Takes optical measurements, measures and fits all eyewear.
- Instructs patients in cleaning and handling of eyewear.
- Evaluates patients with assistance in lens type based on their needs.
- Repairs, adjusts and dispenses prescription lenses and frames.
- Inspects all eyewear to ensure quality prior to dispensing to patient.
- Assists with maintenance of material and supply inventory.
- Assists in care and upkeep of department equipment, supplies and work area.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records.
- Files records, which include patient charges and applicable third party coverage of eyewear.
- Assists in the preparation and writing of reports including daily deposits, inventory reports, and other reports as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures.
