About The Position

Lumentum is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Optical Verification Technician (Co-op Student) to join the R&D Design Verification and Characterization (DVaC) team in the Switching Business Unit based in Ottawa, Ontario. This is an 8-month term position from September 2026 to April 2027, with a pay range of $24-35/hr. The role involves applying expertise in optics to improve test and measurement techniques, characterizing critical optical parameters, implementing automated test code and scripts, applying best practices for team processes, and analyzing and reporting optical, hardware, and software failures.

Requirements

  • Desire to succeed and to do things right the first time.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in active optical components.
  • Team guidance skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Good understanding of test plans, test execution, and bug reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of hardware concepts.
  • College student in Photonics, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
  • Must be currently registered full-time or part time, in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Candidates must be eligible to complete a background check as part of the hiring process.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in software development, instrumentation and automation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Applying your expertise in optics to improve our test & measurement techniques.
  • Applying test measurement techniques to characterize critical optical parameters.
  • Implementing automated test code and scripts that improve our test coverage and the quality of our results.
  • Applying best practices and contributing to the ongoing improvement of team processes and test execution.
  • Analyzing and characterizing optical, hardware and software failures and reporting them to relevant designers using our internal process and tools.
