About The Position

The Optical Tool Technician will join the Accuracy Control & Optical Tool group, supporting submarine construction at the Groton Shipyard. This role is crucial for ensuring in-process dimensional control on components and systems throughout the submarine construction lifecycle, from initial receipt through final grooming, test, and certification. Technicians utilize a variety of metrology equipment to take precise measurements, requiring strong spatial awareness and the ability to follow measurement plans safely and accurately. The role involves determining and utilizing appropriate tooling, performing measurements according to configuration-controlled documents, and providing data to Accuracy Control representatives. The measurements and reference markings are essential for developing cut lines, aligning and installing ship components, supporting fabrication, establishing critical alignments, informing construction decisions, and documenting conditions for ship certification. This position requires collaboration with other technicians, engineering, operations trades, management, and external customers, necessitating good interpersonal and communication skills. Writing, problem-solving, multi-tasking, and basic project management skills are beneficial. Proficiency in standard optical equipment, Total Station, Laser Trackers, CMM arms, and digital photogrammetry is expected, as is the ability to interpret complex blueprints, technical manuals, and shipyard procedures. The role is primarily in a production environment, with potential for occasional off-shift work, travel, and support for offsite work and ship schedules.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 0-5 years experience using optical tooling for precision alignments and measurements, or experience with Machining, 3-D Design, or Trades.
  • Experience with interpreting technical drawings, schematics and tolerancing.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good Communication and Interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrable Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Reading and interpreting Technical Documents.
  • A strong math background with a working knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree or higher in Surveying Technology or Engineering Technology.
  • Metrology/Optical Tool Survey Trade Training.
  • Data Collection, Reporting, and Organization experience.
  • Manufacturing, metal fabrication or construction industry experience.
  • Military or prior Shipbuilding experience.
  • Advanced computer skills, especially in Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergent projects throughout the shipyard supporting manufacture, assembly, and test of submarine components, modules, decks, and hull structure.
  • Ensure in-process dimensional control is maintained on components or systems.
  • Take measurements using a variety of three-dimensional and standard optical metrology equipment.
  • Follow a plan for measurement of critical features, working safely and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Determine the proper tooling for the job, move the tooling to the job, and complete measurements outlined on configuration controlled requirements documents.
  • Provide measurement data to Accuracy Control representatives and work with them to confirm required solutions.
  • Develop cut lines, align and install ship components, support machining and fabrication work, establish critical ship and module alignments, inform subsequent construction decisions, and document conditions in support of ship certification.
  • Collaborate with other Metrology Technicians, Accuracy Control Engineering, and operations trades.
  • Interface with Engineering, Management, Operations groups, Ship’s Management, other shipyards, and external customers.
  • Become proficient in the use of standard optical equipment, Total Station equipment, Laser Trackers, Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) arms, and digital photogrammetry.
  • Become proficient in reading, interpreting, and working from complex blueprints, technical manuals, shipyard procedures, and test documents.
  • Perform occasional off-shift work as needed to support schedule.
  • Potentially travel occasionally to support offsite work and ship schedules.
