About The Position

Corning is a world leader in materials science, known for its innovations in glass, ceramics, and related materials. The Optical Communications segment has evolved into a comprehensive provider of optical solutions for the broader communications industry, serving both carrier and enterprise networks. This role is crucial for supporting product development, new product introduction (NPI), manufacturing, and ensuring the quality and reliability of fiber optic and micro-optic components and assemblies. The position emphasizes hands-on work, meticulous attention to detail, and a desire to deepen technical expertise in optical qualification and reliability engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in optics, micro-optics, opto-mechanical systems, or optical testing (industry or relevant internships/co-ops).
  • Hands-on experience with optical measurement and characterization techniques (e.g., transmission, alignment, basic wavefront or imaging measurements).
  • Familiarity with environmental or reliability testing equipment (thermal chambers, humidity chambers, vibration or shock testing).
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, Excel, or similar.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to qualification or reliability testing of optical components.
  • Experience with optical IL, RL and polarity measuring equipment
  • Experience with interferometers
  • Experience with test automation or scripting (Python, LabVIEW).
  • Knowledge of accelerated life testing concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and execute product validation and qualification plans for testing of fiber optic and micro-optic components and assemblies.
  • Set up and operate environmental and mechanical tests including thermal cycling, thermal shock, humidity, vibration, and mechanical shock.
  • Build and maintain optical test setups to characterize performance before, during, and after qualification testing.
  • Collect, process, and analyze test data to identify performance changes, degradation, or failure modes.
  • Document test procedures, results, and conclusions in clear qualification and validation reports.
  • Support failure analysis and corrective action efforts in collaboration with design and manufacturing teams.
  • Assist with coordination of outsourced qualification testing at external labs.
  • Follow and help maintain compliance with relevant industry standards (e.g., Telcordia, IEC, JEDEC, ISO), as applicable.
  • Manage NPI and DFM projects.
  • Ensure product integrity by managing product data, stage gating, and ensuring proper change management.
