About The Position

In this role as a summer engineering intern you will support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of world-class, high-precision opto-mechanical systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of the Corning Advanced Optics engineering team to develop custom precision opto-mechanical systems. The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Optics or related discipline with concentration in Optics or hyperspectral imaging
  • Basic understanding of optical systems and optical metrology
  • High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in precision engineering and opto-mechanical product development.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2027 (May-August 2027) with a graduation date of December 2027 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate metrology approach.
  • Experience with interferometry, MTF, and other optical metrology instruments
  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MatLab, Python, or Excel.

  • Primary duties will involve working within optical metrology team to design, engineer & build opto-mechanical systems and hyperspectral imaging systems including development of testing approach and instrumentation
