Co-Op - Optical Engineer (Internship)

ASML•Wilton, CT
•Onsite

About The Position

ASML’s YieldStar Sensor Group in Wilton, Connecticut, is seeking a co-op student for at least six months to work on an optical engineering project supporting current or future YieldStar products. The role focuses on supporting and developing optical and photonic sensor systems used in ASML photolithography tools. The student will apply optical engineering expertise in areas such as optical design, tolerancing, and modeling; physical optics simulation; and building and aligning complex sensors. The work may involve CodeV, Zemax, MATLAB, FRED, and other suitable design tools, as well as optical devices and sensors including objectives, relay optics, fibers, cameras, and detectors. This is an on-site position in Wilton, CT, requiring in-person attendance for work-related events, training, and meetings. The co-op must be willing to work in a cleanroom while wearing required protective clothing and equipment for the entire shift. The position may require access to controlled technology, so candidates must be legally authorized to access it before starting work. Offers are contingent on successfully completing a background check and any other required tests. The stated base hourly pay range is $18.00 to $48.00; individual pay depends on factors including job-related skills, education, experience, certifications, abilities, and pay relative to other team members.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in optical engineering or a closely related area of engineering or physics.
  • Demonstrate experience in one or more relevant areas, such as optical design and tolerancing, physical optics modeling, optical sensor alignment, optical sensor metrology test design and build, or optical technologies and devices.
  • Be legally authorized to access controlled technology before beginning work if the position requires such access.
  • Successfully complete a background check and any other tests required for an offer.
  • Be willing to work in a cleanroom wearing coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, and gloves for the entire shift.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information or skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents; and work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to customer satisfaction through prioritization, quality, efficiency, and professionalism.
  • Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy; ability to perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate ownership and accountability, identify bottlenecks, and drive improvements.
  • Communicate openly, clearly, concisely, and professionally, and maintain cooperative working relationships with managers, coworkers, and customers.
  • Work according to a strict set of procedures within provided timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing a master's or Ph.D. degree.
  • Undergraduate students with specific expertise in key areas of optical design and optical systems will also be considered.
  • Experience with CodeV or equivalent software for optical design and tolerancing.
  • Experience with FRED or equivalent software for physical optics modeling.
  • Optical sensor alignment experience using strategies and tools such as optical collimators, mechanical gaging, and interferometers.
  • Experience designing and building optical sensor metrology tests.
  • Expertise with optical technologies and devices such as polarization devices, relay optics, objectives, light sources, fibers, cameras, and detectors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform optical design, optical tolerancing, and modeling using CodeV, Zemax, or equivalent tools.
  • Conduct physical optics simulations, including wave propagation, partial coherence calculations, polarization optics modeling, and other optical effects.
  • Build and align complex sensors using mechanical, collimation, and interferometry techniques.
  • Support current or future YieldStar products by supporting and developing optical and photonic sensor systems.
