Senior/Staff/Principal Optical Engineer - Visualization Systems

Horizon Surgical Systems, Inc.•Los Angeles, CA
•$110,000 - $185,000

About The Position

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is seeking an experienced optical engineer to contribute to a novel surgical visualization system for ophthalmology. The role supports development of an advanced, multimodality ophthalmic visualization system for a robotic surgery platform, working closely with optical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to construct, evaluate, and maintain novel imaging devices. The position involves optical and opto-mechanical design for a multi-modality surgical imaging platform comprising a multi-channel digital microscope, complex incoherent illumination system, and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SSOCT) system. The engineer will also build and maintain prototype systems and release candidates, develop and follow procedures for system construction and calibration, evaluate modular bench prototypes, incorporate feedback from early users and pilot studies, support manufacturability and serviceability, and work within a quality management system.

Requirements

  • Minimum experience: B.S. with 5 years, M.S. with 3 years, or Ph.D. with 0 years in optical or electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience constructing, aligning, and calibrating optical systems, including bench/laboratory prototypes and commercial systems.
  • Familiarity with optical design tools such as Zemax, Code V, or OSLO.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • Strong understanding of practical optical systems, including opto-mechanical design and tolerancing (GD&T), coherence and statistical optics, and design considerations for selecting light sources and detectors.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience: B.S. with 10 years, M.S. with 5 years, or Ph.D. with 3 years in optical or electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Prior experience working with Optical Coherence Tomography systems.
  • Prior experience developing medical devices and understanding quality management systems and design controls as applied to medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in optical and opto-mechanical design of a multimodality surgical imaging platform, including a multi-channel digital microscope, complex incoherent illumination system, and swept-source optical coherence tomography system.
  • Construct, align, calibrate, and maintain advanced prototype systems and release candidates, coordinating with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to optimize system performance.
  • Devise, maintain, and execute standard operating procedures for construction, alignment, and calibration of prototype systems.
  • Construct and evaluate modular bench prototypes to demonstrate candidate design capabilities.
  • Gather feedback from early users and pilot studies and collaborate with product management and engineering teams to iterate on designs.
  • Operate within a quality management system to support traceability and team-wide collaboration.
  • Participate in design-for-manufacturing efforts to ensure system manufacturability and serviceability.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and company-paid benefits package.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Remote days.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Paid maternity and paternity leave.
